Whats goin on!
I am trying to figure out if shaving my heads wold be a good idea fo more power. I,ve got a 460 with flat tops and an Rv cam with 73 heads on it. It doesn't ave the power I thought it would. I have a new intake(Edelbrock 2166), headers, and MSD on order but I'm really starting to want to make it scream. Someone told me if yo shaved a little off of the heads it would bump your compression and hp's. Would my compression be too high or should I give it a shot. My budget is kinda limited after the new orders. Thanks.
shaving the heads will raise the compression by 1/2 a point at most. I would think a 460 with intake, headers, and msd should run good. What carb are you running. Is it a 2bbl cause if it is a 4bbl it should run damn good.
my 302 that i built is on there as well as my project tbird with the 5.0 ho swap for the motor that i built. it's gonna be carbe instead of that injected junk.
I think I set the timing at around14 degrees. Ive got the Edelbrock 1407 and factory intake now but I've ordered the Edelbrock2166.I don't know the compression. Here is the cam
int. exh.
Duration @.050 204 214
Lobe spread 112
Valve lift .490 .516
cam lift .280 .295
The carb is only a couple weeks old and I didn't do anything to it. The plugs look alright too. I just rebuilt the motor about 1500 miles ago.I don't have the numbers in front of me to check the compression but I will look. I don't have roller rockers either. I thought the same thing though, I figured it would have plenty of power. My budget is getting limited now so i hope I can work with what I've got. I am kind of new to the engine building process, I might just need to take it to someone who can tune it right for me.
is your cam degreed. does it lope hard. i doubt it since you have an rv cam. but if it does lope you may want to get a lower gear ratio and a small stall
Yeah set the initial timing with the distributor advance hose removed and the vacuum port plugged at the carb. Something else you might check, put a vacuum gauge on the left timed port (where the vacuum advance is connected) of the edelbrock carb, at idle how much vacuum is showing? Should be zero. ARe you comparing the seat of the pants feel to when it was original? What rear gears do you have? later and good luck
I just bought the truck about a year ago. I didn't think it was going to make it up my driveway it was so sick. I drove it for a while and then decided to rebuild it. Once I rebuilt it I really was not satisfied with it. It probably has 4.10s or 4.56s and it wont spin a tire on takeoff. That's why I decided to find the bottom of my wallet. I haven't put the intake, headers, or msd on yet but I hope it will help. Thanks for the advice, I'm not much of a mechanic so try to bare with me. Sooo, I take the vacuum advance hose off when I time it. It is in a 78 f-250 4x4 so I know it is not going to be a race car but I would like to make it run better than it does now.
