Sounds really nice 521, looking forward to hearing about it when you get the engine all buttoned in there.

Have some property up east of 49, maybe I can check your truck out next summer. Should have my stroker 408 all buttoned in then too.

Your right and well, I am not that wrong. A carbed motor seems to make more hp and tq than an efi vehicle, as far as, adding performance parts, which is what I was thinking. If you have your motor tuned to perfection on a chassis dyno, then your right it will have potentially better fuel metering, easier starting, lower emissions, better fuel economy, and performance. Then again the right ignition, properly matched and tuned carb/ intake could possibly equal if not surpass the efi. Its a matter of what is done and who does it. Depends on how a person looks at it really. later

I agree with ya JW, I've had a couple of fun motors when I was younger with assorted Holley carbs and really enjoyed them.

This is my first project that has efi. To be honest with ya, I was looking forward to playing with the programming of the ECM. Then I found out that 1995 DOE0 ECM does not allow programming for end users, but the end user can buy chips.

I remember that seat of the pants horsepower that I felt with the Holley's. From everything I've read in the forums, it seems I'm in good hands with Ken programming me a 3 stage Diablo chip. Once I get the chip, I'm going to do a few dyno pulls, then send Ken the air/fuel charts, and he can fine tune the chip.

We've come along way from driving it around the block with the new jets in the carb!

Yep. I hope it works out with the diablo chip, and it should be set up great once you have all the data available to give the chip burner.

I tell you what I used to be convinced that efi was the best starting vehicle made, my brother had a 454 build 10.5:1 compression, a big lumpy cam, and a weiand intake and 750 holley double pumper carb, msd distributor and igniton. It was tuned and dynoed at the flywheel right at 470hp and 517 tq, not bad for all stock rotating assembly, little more compression and a cam. He drove that thing daily for years, no choke on the carb whatsoever, it fired the first time you touched the key everytime 100 degree weather or 2 degree. It blew my mind, it started better than any engine I had owned efi or not. The throtttle response was crazy, thats why when people mention efi is the best I don't disagree, just know that great performance can be done with a carb. I don't know why I posted that, guess it was a step down memory lane or something. haha

So how much longer do you have before you get that bear of a motor and install it? later

Hey 521,
Had the same thing with 95 Bronco unable to program, you could yank a VEX-1 ECM out of a Mustang of about the same vintage. Thats what the programmer did in my Bronco for programming flexibliity. I used Byron Renolds at Race Systems.com . Dont know if this will help ya, or if your OK with the 3 stage.

Seems all my fords started well. Most required the good ole pump it twice, and turn the key. Now with EFI it's just turn the key!

I was told to expect shipment of the engine around January 15. with this being the silly season and all, I expect it will probably turn into the end of Jan.

I have to tell you a brief story about chokes though. I used to live in S. Carolina, had a 351 with a Holley 750 dfdp, never needed a choke down there. Drove up to Virginia for a weekend trip, found snow on the ground in the morning. The motor fired right up. Couldn't move the car however! Darn Automatic, everytime I tried to coax it into gear, it would stall! Took 15 minutes of idle time before it would play nice. The group that was with me let me know (about 20 times) just what a $15 manual choke was worth that day?

Yeah I'm ok with the Diablo chip, the other forum about chips has some very knowlegable people hanging out in it, very much like this one. Ken from Motorhaven.com sounds to me like the guru of all chip programming guru's! Seems the tech support is second to none as well, so I'm comfortable. The only reason I mentioned the programming of the ECM is the company I own specializes in Electronic Control Systems for Detention facilities. We program PLC's (Ladder) and write custom GUI's (graphic user interface) in Visual Basic or C++. So it sounded interesting. With the chip being a 3 stage, it allows me flexibility, and I can always have another chip burned.

Good story!

The 3 stage chip does sound useful, I like that idea. You could have performance, nitrous and towing, hummm, sounds pretty darn nice.
