I have a 72 Ford f100 with a 302 engine. I just got it back on the road after sitting up for about 8 or 9 yrs. When I first start driving it I didn't notice tapping sound until about a month later. You don't hear it while the truck is idling only when you're accelerating. Could this be a lifter problem? I'd really appreciate the help!
is it in the top end or the bottom end. listen to it closely with hood open get under it with the brake on and listen. whe you have the sound isolated to a certain cylinder or cylinders, while running pull that plug if it stops the sound there that would be a wrist pin. if it gets worse it is a bearing. prob. just the lifters though. did you change your oil and filter. it would be a good idea to clean out the oil pan and the oil screen.
It definately sounds like an exhaust manifold leak. Most likely the gasket. I had a '92 explorer do the same thing, quiet at idle and making a kind of a knocking sound when any load was put on it. Turned out to be the exhaust manifold gasket. Hope this helps!
