Hey guy i was wondering how difficult was putting a manual trans in place of my C6. The truck is a 78 F250 super cab with a 460 and c6. I would like to have an Overdrive for my truck but pull my car with it so I was thinking of going the manual root. If you guys can give me an Idea of what would be needed for this conversion i would appriciate it
thanks
A parts truck with a 4 speed would be best. You need a new floor hump plate, pedal assembly, clutch linkage and frame pivot. I also changed cross member.
Yes. The cab should even have the holes already cut and have rubber plugs in them. The floor pan at least in 4x4's unbolts also. I did it in my '70 using a '76 150 4x4 for parts. If your truck is a 2wd I am not sure about the floor pan. The holes were also in the frame for the clutch pivot.
I found that the cross member for the trannie mount from the C6 automatic was about an inch off when I mounted my 4 speed in a 73. I can't remember if it was an inch forward or backward but do remember that I had to grind off the rivits in the cross member and redrill the frame to bolt the cross member back in the correct place. Not a big deal but after fighting to mount trannie to the cross member, I came to the conclusion that it was not meant to go there. I've never heard of this problem except for what happened to me so verify this.
well i would like the over drive. i know someone with a 89 f350 460 5 speed dually and his is fine and pulls a travel trailor. what trans is in his truck?
I am not familiar with the newer trannies. I hope the 460 came with a stronger trans. I have a friend who had a 5 speed with a 6 cyl engine in a late 80's pick up. He had alot of problems with it ie. in and out of the shop. Maybe the 460 option had a tougher trans?????? Might want to check. The thought of overdrive is nice though when it comes to gas mileage eh
The main trannies that I know of that are 5 speeds that go on the 460's are the ZF trannies and those are in the 92-97 F250's and F350's, possibly older models also, not sure. The other problem will be is that trannie has a hydrolic clutch so you will have to do some custom work for the lines, pedal, etc. You will also need to make sure your 460 is internally balanced to for the flywheel.
I did a 460 swap in a old crew cab that I had and I used the NP435 trannie and I had to get a 351M/400 bell housing for the 460 and I had to use a internally balanced 390 flywheel with a 390 starter to make the manual work on the 460. I personally believe the NP435 would be a better choice.
