My hedman's I just installed are coming about an1/2 inch to an
inch from the starter. Is the heat going to be to much for the starter? Seems to close to me.
It sounds like it will give you problems. That is the problem with running "cheaper" headers. They do not take all of the tolerances into consideration. I am not sure of a good fix for you. You might want to post this question in the forum that is appropriate to youre vehicle (87-96, 80-86, etc).
My question about whether they are American made is a "tongue in cheek" comment regarding American made quality. Although I agree and am as concerned about American companies and loss of jobs; how can you tell any more. American made can mean assembled in America from foreign parts or sold by a headquartered American company that markets foreign parts. My job of 23 years went to Ireland. I go through heater blower motors from branded American companies like tissue paper; must have a pile of eight of them now.
Anyways. Go to hedman.com "contact us" and email techsupport
with your problem or call them. They are based in California and
are an old company and must compete with many other header manufacturers. You may have a mis-manufactured header; fixture moved, etc. Maybe they might replace you right header. They may not know that there is a problem with your year-model.
Try to see what they may do to correct or minimize the problem; they may work with you. After all they are already getting bad press here due to your problem.

Try either Jegs or Summit for insulating products. Your header problem may not be that uncommon. At Jegs;Exhaust;Heat Shields there is an Aluminized Starter Heat Shield by Thermotec #893-14150. May be worth a try.
take a piece of sheet metal and wrap it around yer starter and use a couple big hose clamps or some bailing wire to secure it. Makes a nice homemade heat shield
