Let me tell you son, I have a slightly modified 302 ci in my truck and it is so loud and deep that when i start it up next to a car with a security system, i set off the siren. You hear my truck before you see it, and when you hear me driving down the road you expect to see a top feul dragster, but no, it's my 77 f-100 and i do it with a set of headers and a little bit of pipe on both sides to aim it out the side of the truck, no $500 cat-back system or big mufflers,it's all about LACK of exhaust not putting more stuff on.
If your gonna use open headers you gotta keep one thing in considereation especially now its cold outside. When you turn the truck off cold air gets sucked up inside the headers, especially with open shorties. If that cold air hits that hot valve it will warp it a little. Now each time you shut the truck off and the cold air hits the hot valve it warps it even more, so on and so on. Now i've run long tube headers on my 302 and they sound damn good especially when ya leave er in 1st and get up to about 25 then let off, also it would shoot flames out, I guess I had some timing issues back then. Anyhow, open headers are fun to an extent, I couldnt even hear my radio playin with it full blast. Hard to carry on a conversation with that racket. I'd suggest using a cutout system behind the headers so you have loud exhaust when you want it.
