The Flash's In Question

Since there have been various discussions on the 2 flashs throughout many threads, I though I would try and bring it all under one roof and have this thread strictly for the 2 flashes we have been recently discussing

1. Most Recent Dec Flash
2. UpComing January Flash

Questions I have

1. What Exactly does the Dec Flash do to the truck and has anyone had it done? If so what have you found.

2. What are we to expect from the Jan flash?

3. Is either of them expected to address the noise and mpg issues?

My techy said the December flash will fix the following:

a. White smoke on startup.
b. The fuel gauge reading inaccurately. (Which he says can cause the perception of poor fuel mileage (Wrong answer, unless one does not do the math and only uses the onboard comp to calculate fuel mileage)

Can anyone confirm if this?

OK, we have flashed two trucks with the Dec. update and both have reported in with less white smoke on start and considerably less noise. The Jan. flash is expected to deal more with the mpg issue than anything else but also address power and noise issues. Jan flash is due out anywhere from mid-Jan to mid-april according to my sources...sorry I don't have more at this time. I am still trying to get a revision # for this Dec. update so you all can tell your service techs about it....

The flash works on the early 03 builds as well as the newer builds correct?

The reason I ask, is because I have heard rumblings that Ford has changed the hardware in the engine on the newer builds (Junish to now) from the original engine. As well as software. just want to be sure the flash is applicable to the earlier build dates (with the supposid older hardware/design) as well.

Yes, the flash is good on all, only hardware change was the fuel injectors themselves....

Thanks..So if I can talk me dealer into replacing all the injectors, then there should be no diff between the 03 and 04 engines other than software..which hopefully will be corrected with the upcoming flashes..?

As far as injectors go, you are correct. But there were quite a few other changes in the 04.

What other changes were done to the 04? Besides the injectors and of course the software upgrades.

POWERTRAIN/CHASSIS:
Engine/Transmission
Diesel Engine, 6.0L
•Revised components for emissions control
– Increased EGR cooler size and modified tube
configuration
•“Wavy” HP oil rail has volume increased to 30 in
from 15 in
. This reduces pressure fall-off during
injection and improves emissions & fuel economy
• Modified rocker carrier for wavy rail mounting and
glow plug serviceability
•Lower emissions of 2.5 gms NOx/BHP-Hr (was 3.2
in 2003)
•New engine calibration
•Revised NVH Sound package/Heat management.
Heat management floor pan patch is used to control
heat generated by emission control devices
• Intake manifold revised by eliminating the rear
branch for improved serviceability
• Redesigned turbocharger to reduce turbo whine and
improve low end boost and ability to drive EGR
– Number of turbine blades increased from 10 to 13
–Revised trim and VNT vanes
–Revised mounting bracket
•Revised exhaust down pipe tunes out turbo noise
• Piston bowl and pin bore geometry are modified to
improve combustion and durability
• Camshaft intake profile and exhaust event timing are
modified for emissions
• ICP Sensor is relocated to RH rocker cover for
improved heat protection
• LH rocker cover and breather are modified by
moving the breather external to the rocker cover to
allow for larger rail and to improve breather
performance
• Incremental cooling hardware for increased heat
rejection
•Water pump increased to 100mm (from 90mm) for
increased cooling system flow to offset higher heat
rejection
• Enhanced Vistronic variable speed fan clutch
is controlled by Powertrain Control Module (PCM)
• Diesel engine fuel system is revised to place fuel
filter/heater ahead of the fuel pump. Improved fuel
pump life, reduced waxing and reduced heat transfer
to the fuel tank are the resulting benefits

emtabmm,

another question. i have an 04 with the 03 engine. is it possible the item below is incorperated into my truck? it seems to be located in the same place or did they just change the hoses?

filter/heater ahead of the fuel pump. Improved fuel
pump life, reduced waxing and reduced heat transfer
to the fuel tank are the resulting benefits

I would say no, the changes are specific to the engine, not the truck. Heres the link to the actual pdf file posted by Ford (fleet ford actually), its 10.5 meg so high speeders only . The changes to the 6.0 are listed starting on page 18.
