when I bought my truck it had like 155k on her. she now has 166k. not sure but when is it time to change out the differential fluid? if it's not broke. dont fix it.. If I change it is that any thing else that needs to be change out after I crake the seal to drain her (i.e filter )? what weight of fluid do I need to put back in her.thanks.
Just get a gasket to seal the cover when you put it back together. No filter in there, but be sure to wipe out the crevices a the bottom of the case, that will be where dirt and other particles tend to settle. I've got GL-5 spec gear lube in mine, I'm not sure the weight I ended up using though. I'm thinking it was 80/85w90. If you have limited slip (trac-loc) you will need to get 4 oz. of friction modifier, and put that in before the gear oil when you are refilling.
Thanks EPNCSU2006,
How do I tell if I have a litmited slip (trac-loc) on my truck. wouldnt there be a trac-loc on the instrament panel for it? Dont have one of those.. . Is there a better brand to use?
Look at the sticker on the door jamb under "axle codes" and then check the owner's manual or post the code back here if you can't find it there. I used NAPA oil, which is Valvoline but costs much less.
You probably have an 8.8", so you just unbolt the cover on the back. I don't think there's a gasket, just clean up the surface and run a bead of RTV silicone around it.
