just got myself a 1999 Explorer Sport 4x4, an awesome vehicle!
One problem though - the HVAC/Temperature/FAN controls don't light up at night, i.e. all the dashboard lights are on except the temp control ones. This my first Explorer and I haven't seen the fuse wiring diagram, but will this problem be because of:
1) faulty fuse in the fuse box
or
2) plain light bulb failure behind the controls?
i haven't looked at the fuse box yet, but everything in the cabin seems to operate OK... Can a single fuse be dedicated for the HVAC lights? I thought it'd share it with smth else...
the mirror puddle light on the driver side isn't working, but I think that's just a burn out bulb..
Hi there!
I recently bought a 1998 Ford Explorer XLT - 82,000 Miles. I have the same problem. Half of my display window (i guess that's what you call it) is out and the other half is on. I haven't checked the manual to see if it's a fuse, but I will check. I also noted that the display for the CD/radio/cassestte player (factory) is out. Please keep me updated on your progress!!! Good luck!!
well, I checked the fuse and it's responsible for other lights that are in working condition. I forgot which ones exactly but some radio control lights, etc... It's fuse N10... I pulled it out anyway - it's ok, so it's obviously the bulb or bulbs, it's probably two of them... Now I'm thinking about how to get to those lighs behind the "AC/heater assembly" - that's what they call it in the manual.
Do you guys/gals think it's enough to take the middle console face plate off to get to it? Or it's necessary to take off the whole dash?
oh, and the puddle light is a light bulb which is inside the outside mirrors, it's installed at the bottom of the mirror and illuminates when you unlock the car. I guess it's one of those luxiry things, sort of a pathway illumination...
Vix - Get yourself a Haynes manual. It shows how to remove the middle console face plate as well as other interior parts. It's not difficult but the pictures and instructions in the manual are much better than trying to explain on this forum.
Nulife - the radio display problem is likely unrelated to your other light problems. Search this forum for radio display problems or check out this website: www.shareamemory.com/radio
Thank you both for your help. It would appear that the factory CD/cassette/radio display is a well document topic. I've searched a few other places and this is apparently the problem:
