Temp Gage

I have a 99 4.0L. In the mornings when I start it up the temp goes to a point in th enormal rang of the gage and then it goes way down -- sometimes below the min. Then for no reason it gets hotter.

It never comes close to the max

should I worry about this -- or should it go to one point on the gage and stay there unless driven hard.

Does it do it all the time or is it intermittent? Usually this is caused by a bad sending unit; however could be wiring. Check the connection on the sending unit. With these computer controlled cars today, getting harder to troubleshoot. Clean everything; check connections and go from there. Actually when guages act this way it is often a bad ground (which causes a good deal of electical problems). Lots of causes, not many answers. Just start to eliminate the obvious and the problem will be solved. If you can get a code reader, have the scan done. That will tell you a lot about where to start.

I have a 95 4.0L, changed the sending unit three or four times now, dont understand why they go bad, but have the same sort of symptoms - always seem to go 'cold' when they go bad. Anyway, always do the thermostats and the sending unit at the same time, also just do them when changing coolant.

No its only one gage, the temp gage that does it.

I knoticed another post with similar simptoms

how bad is it to run the engine this way -- the engine runs as smooth as ever and most of the time its with in the normal range it just fluctuates as i drive along

Sounds like a flaky thermostat to me.

Irazu, all good advice. Check all connections for sure. If the problem persists, like Ken said, could be a flaky T-stat. I currently have one that does that. When my coolant reaches 195F, the stat doesn't open gradually. It stays shut tight, until the coolant is well above 195F. Then, it SUDDENLY POPS WIDE OPEN, and the temp drops dramatically. It will do this once or twice, until it levels off, and keeps the temp steady.
