thermostat?

My 99 4.0 4x4 is having a heat problem. Whe i first start it it warms up to normal temp and keeps going. It redines the temp for about ten seconds then returns to normal and never gets hot again. Could this be caused by the thermo.? and if so how much is replacement?

Thermostats are dirt cheap. I personally get that kind of part from Ford because I like their quality.
