Hello all, I've had my '03 F-350 for about 3 weeks now and am very happy with it overall. But the other day I finally got around to crawling under the truck (been working long hours). I was stunned to find that the rear axle is missing a bunch of paint just inboard of both shock mounts, and under one of the spring mounts. I would kinda guess that the transporter ahole wrapped cargo chains around the axle tubes rather than find an intelligent spot to use a hook, but I can't explain the missing paint under the spring mount U-bolts.
Is this something I should bitch about? I know Ford has an iffy reputation about warranty repairs, but since the front axle is well-painted my guess is that my rear axle is not up to their normal standards.

Maybe it was a bad eye day for the guy who is responsible for painting rear axles. Your rear is a sterling 10.5, pretty good axle, I woudn't worry about it being below standards.
Paint on the rear axles isn't very durable anyhow, I cleaned mine up and re-painted it a few weeks after getting my 01.

Well, I meant just the paint on the axle. Don't have enough miles on it to have any complaints about the axle in the mechanical sense.
I've also read that folks have had the paint on the rear diff cover peel off after extended towing. Makes me think those finned aftermarket diff covers might be worthwhile.

Well with any diff, they do warm up, the finned covers are nice and do work, if you have the extra smacks to get em.

I wouldn't bother bitching about it. You are more apt to get more iritated by their attitude. I would just buy a couple cans of paint and paint the areas. I too just took delivery of a SD and there are many areas underneath I need to paint to protect. Good luck
