I run Stan's headers on my 75 4x4 with a 390.
if you use a mini high toruqe you will never have to take the header off.
Buy the way Stans headers are the best investment i have ever made for my truck.
Amen on the Stan's headers on my '74 highboy too! Great piece! The mini starter has lots of room around Stan's for in-and-out, almost too good to be true! But I also used the mini-starter with Sanderson shorties, and no problem there either, except more concern about heat soaking. Steve
One of the old hands on the Ford-FE site "invented" an adaptor nose to allow fitting a '90s Ford ministarter to our FE's. I've got one on my highboy with Stan's headers, and it works like a charm, lots of room and no heating problems whatsoever. It's for sale thru PA-Performance for $53 plus shipping, and you provide the Ford starter and a bit of wiring. E-mail me if you want a link.

Sorry for resurrecting such an old thread, but I was wondering if anyone has any information on this adapter that will allow you to use a '90s Ford factory mini starter on a FE?
I would love to put a mini starter on my '68 F100 with 390, and I have a mini starter off of a '95 Bronco just laying around. I did some searching but was unable to find it. Did they stop making it?
If you're looking for a high-performance mini starter, brands like Powermaster, Tuff Stuff, and MSD are good options. They're designed to handle more heat and work better in tight spaces. You can find them on websites like Summit Racing or Jegs. Another tip is that some people have had luck using starters from later model Ford 302 or 351 engines on their Ford 390 engines, since Ford engines often share similar mounting points and electrical connections for starters.
I understand that there are companies that make mini starters for an FE, but most of them are expensive.
If someone makes an adapter that will let me use the SBF factory mini starter that I already have, that sounds like a very appealing and inexpensive option... but I'm not sure if it is still available. I thought someone here might know.
just put headers on my 76 with a 390 and that giant starter ain't liking it too much. Won't turn over when hot. After it cools will crank.
Anybody know of a newer, smaller starter that will fit a 390? I know about the pricey ones from Summit. I know other makes can interchange certain year's stock starters. Are we Ford guys so lucky?
Thanks,
Mark
I had been through a couple starters on my 10.5 to 1 with headers 390 and the hot starts were really slow, after considerable research I bought the Powermaster 9606 from Summit, $231.00 and it is awesome, quick cranking, , much easier to get on and off and actually room for a heat shield between the starter and header, the old starter actually was hard against the header.
I really like the ability of the powermaster to "clock" the starter to get the optimum location for the motor and battery terminal
Old thread for sure but some info worth adding. Recently installed Powermaster 9000-6 mini starter on 10.5:1 390 since had been dealing with heat soak issues with the stocker. So far, excellent. The 9000-6 is slightly faster than the 9606 @3.70:1 Icing on the cake was got it for $131 at summit. Must've been a fluke since now listed for $184 although still cheaper than the 9606. Installed header wrap and starter shield as well since goal is to make things bullet proof. Under hood temps noticeably much cooler and engine much quieter as well.
