Oil Filter Problems

I am having a problem with my 240 I-6 banging rods on a cold start. The oil filters are evidently draining back. I have the problem with Fram and Wix, not Mobilone. I can't find a supplier in mid CA. Anybody know what chains supply these things?

Will any other make filter solve the problem?

I have heard that this problem is chronic on the sideways mounted applications.

I have an angled side mount on my '94 Bronco. I use a Motorcraft FL820S. No drainback after shut-down or clatter after oil change. I let my drain sometimes overnight and never a problem.

You also should be able to find Purolator filters which should be about as good as Motorcraft. I have run both and never had a problem. Have a Wix now and no problem. I am going to try the highly rated FleetGuard (Cummins) filters from a local commercial truck dealer.

Don't forget to prefill your new filters.

Oh, also, it might not be your rods, it might be your main bearings. If your mains are becoming fried they tend to get loud till they warm up. The more they are toasted, the longer thay complain. I hope its your filter.
If you have an AutoZone near by, they carry Mobil filters.

Oh yeah, if you have a real oil pressure gauge, what is the oil pressure like?

Also, what grade oil are you using?

And, how many mile on that engine?

I always use Motorcraft 400S oil filters from Wal-Mart,$2.77 each, and pre-fill them before installation.I also disconnect my coil pack and turn the motor over until I see oil pressure build up.

Too thick of oil could also cause a knocking, when it is cold out, you might have 80 psi of oil pressure, but the oil is not going anywhere fast. I would stay away from fram, quakerstate, and pennzoil oil filters, they are all junk. I have ruined a motor using the fram filter, it collapsed, and my mother was driving the truck, so she called me said the truck was knocking, well, by then it was too late. The extra dollars for a good oil filter makes cheap insurance.

Hmmm. Guess I should have looked at the dates when I first started posting to this thread. It had a couple responses and then laid dormant for two weeks. I suspect CougarJohn isn't watching this thread anymore. Oh well.

Yes i just found that out yesterday, that autozone carries the mobilone filters. Had to drive a ways to get there, bought about 5, better than shipping them for $6 though... Also, i noticed since i switched to mobil1 filter & oil, there isnt much being caught in the filters , and is it ok to only change the oil and leave the filter with almost nothing caught in there til next change?

whate are you changing it at? Usually you can get 8000 miles out of a good oil filter and syn oil.

Wow 8000, holy crap. i usually change the mobil 1 and filter @ every 3000. I started doing that because i found the old owner who claimed he used mobil 1 but it was actually Motorcraft full-synthetic (aka the fake kind)

It is getting pretty expensive to do it every 3000 so i am pushing to about 5000 now.

someone on here sent in oil analysis every 1000 miles, and proved that most engine wear occured within the first 3000 miles of use, he said he changed the filter at 12k, and at about 18k the oil was done. The main thing with dino oils is the plastic things in there which make it thicken up, shear out of the oil and then plug up in your oil filter, so if the plastic things were not there, like in synthetic oil, the filter would not plug up as near as quick, plus you have better engine protection, and a cleaner motor internally. I see only benifits with using mobil 1. If you extend your oil changed to 8k, it would make up the difference in cost, or atleast be pretty close.

Unhappy New engine wear . . .

One of the most important things to do with a new engine is to put some magnets on the oil filter to draw any ferric wear particles out of the oil. Draining the oil does the same thing but magnets are better because the wear material is removed almost immediately rather than waiting hundreds or thousands of miles for removal.
