Adding a 4x4

Just wanted to know if anyone as ever done a 2wheel to 4wheel conversion. If so, is it worth the aggrevation. Oh yeah, I'm going from a 5speed 2wheel drive to a auto 4wheel drive. Thanks in advance.

Anything can be done to cars with enough time and money. I'm sure people out there have done it, but I would think it is tough. The differences between a 4wd and 2wd Ranger are more than just a transfer case and front driveshafts. For instance, the entire front suspension is different. In the end, you'll either have to swap a lot more parts (in which case it would be best to have a parts 4wd Ranger to cannibalize) or you'll have to custom fab a lot in which case you'll come out with an animal that can be tough to maintain. I would have to have a really good reason not to just go out and buy a 4wd Ranger before I'd attempt it.

If you have your heart set on it, go with the solid axle and leaf spring conversion. There is a lot less holes to drill and parts to fabricate. I am currently researching it and it in my opinion looks a lot easier.

Thanks for the encouragement, but what do you mean by less holes to drill and parts to fabricate.

nothing too hard, just some leaf and pick-up point brackets and the holes to mount them, unless you are going to weld them on. If you are just going to weld them on then you will have a stouter truck but it will make it harder to repair if you are intending to beat the snot out of it

Do you know roughly how it should take. Assuming I have all of the parts ready to go. My donor truck is a 1986 Bronco 4x4

Semi-easy way = swap your truck body onto a wrecked that hopefully has the drivetrain you desires still intact.

If you have a piece or two missing from the factory 4x4 frame/suspension, it's still A LOT better than piecing it together and carving a 2wd frame uip!
