Does anyone know what would cause the rear antilock light and the brake light to come on at the same time?
When the light is off everything seems to work fine, truck stops pretty well. when the lights come on (randomly) the rear tires lock up under heavy braking. I've noticed that the brakes are getting squishy, so I'm not sure if it's the master cylinder needing to be replaced or if the antilock module is causing the problem.
I am not sure what the problem is exactly, but I am having the same problem.
I took out the sensor in my rear axle and cleaned well. This stopped the lights from coming on for about two weeks, but it is back on now. I took it out again, and everything is clean as before.
Originally posted by eriojas have the same problem after having the truck under water for a long time, long story, where exactly is the rear axle sensor?
I think it's up on top of the gear housing but someone else could maybe confirm this.
I have an 8.8" rear and it sits right on top (a wire also coming from it). There is only one bolt holding the bracket down (13mm). Loosen the bolt, then hand turn the bolt til it comes out. CAUTION!! From my experience, clean the area around the sensor before removing - no telling what you will have in between the two groves as I did. Then I removed the sensor as a whole (w/ wire attached). It is like a big magnet with a small square on the bottom. Mine had some metal shavings on it which I blew off w/ can-o-air. Oiled the o-ring before placing back in after cleaning.
This is the jist of it. Like my previous post, it only helped for a short while - still getting brake and anti-lock lights on dash.
stupid question but have you checked the brake fluid level? mine did the same thing and the float switch wasnt floating , filled the master cylender and the problem has not returned.

Do you have rough shifts when those lights are on?
Mine did the same thing, and it was that variable speed sensor that they are talking about, sitting on top of the rear diff. Cost for a new one is about $17 at the dealer. Every now and then, maybe months apart, those lights come on again, but stopping and turning off the key and restarting it seems to clear it and then it is fine for a long time. Must be a code that pops up and needs to be cleared.
BTW, changing that sensor also cleared up my start/stop clunk for awhile as well.
have the same problem, rear abs and brake light on, disconnected sensor in brake fluid reservoir and brake light went off but rear abs still on, connect the sensor and brake light on again, any ideas, also cleaned the sensor in the rear differential but abs light still on, maybe cahnge sensor? any ideas on brake light?
