Automatic Locking Hubs 1995 F150

Need help..when driving in 4x4 mode my left front wheel started making a clunking sound like it us engaging and disengaging. I've been told to remove the hub and grease the parts inside. The truck has 110,000 miles and I don't believe the previous owner has done any maintenance on them.
My question...the hubs have 3 torx screws holding on the 4x4 cap..when I remove the screws and cap there is another cap or cover over the hub..how does this come off...is there a special tool...I thought once I removed the cap that the bearing spring and seals etc. would be right there....I was wrong....any help would be appreciated....Thanks

The main part of the hub is held in by an internal snap ring. If you look carefully you will find a small sheet metal clip on the side, maybe under some grease. Remove it and then use needle nose pliers to compress the ring and remove the hub.

Too much grease can be the cause of problems with automatic hubs.

Now I got a real stupid question..... how would you know if the autos were not working?? Seemed to do OK in the big storm Sunday (they are getting pretty regular around here!) and when I have used 4 low on the beach.... but I could just be ignorant or not know if one did not work. This is my first 4x4.

Edited for content

when neither of your front tires spin. when you get stuck with one or both of the tires spinning in the rear but nothing happening up front.

another way to tell is to put the truck up on jack stands and put it in 2-wheel and then engage 4-wheel and at least one tire should spin on the front!

tap each hub with a hammer (not hard but firm)....sometimes it will loosen it up enough to spin, then drive around (NOT ON PAVEMENT) to grease it up. Then go to Napa and order a set of Warn Premiums for like $70.

you're right...that was a really really stupid question!
fishmanndotcom,

That was a crappy answer, even if you were just kidding!! The only "stupid question" is the one not asked. That is what these forums are for, people to ask questions and learn, get a grip on you high an mighty self and quit bashing people in all of your posts!!

Buzzard_Wing,

Don't be worried about asking "stupid questions". First off, welcome to the 4x4 world, and what better way to be introduced than to be in a FORD!!!

Check the archives as there have been numerous questions about removing and replacing hubs. It is really simple and can be done in a few hours by a beginner. I personally use Warn hubs, Milemarkers are decent, and Superwinch makes a set. Around here the Warns are more readily available and are have the best reputation. It all boils down to you budget and availability of parts that are near you. Check e-bay as people always have hubs for sale, new or used.

haha, ok Karl. Sorry for 'flame'! even though he himself said it was stupid. If you take my comments that serious then you need to lighten up. If you read my former posts I am a joker and try to keep ppl on their lighter sides

i fail to see how it was crappy as i told him what he was looking for! BTW....I can show you high an mighty

EDIT: I am sorry buzzard_wing (sincerely) I really wasn't trying to be a dick! just messing around with ya! Come down to the house sometime and Ho' and I can show you a good off-roading adventure whether or not it be in mud behind my house or rocks up at tellico

I was only slightly offended...(but someone edited your response). really the question is not totally stupid. I have had the truck a year and put 27000 miles on it. I occasionally use 4wd on the rock farm up in Maine, in the snow, and on the beach. It works. But if one of the hubs did not lock??

So, the question is HOW would you know running the truck if they did not work or even if one of them did not engage?? Putting the truck on jackstands will likely NOT show one of them not working. (no lockers) I only have two jackstands that are beefy enough for this truck.... even my old C2500 crushed one of the the damn ramps (I can change the oil on the F250 by just sliding under it).

I appreciate the advise and will surely invest in manual hubs... but they ain't no $70 ... For a 95 heavy duty there is 'conversion kit' for 61.95 and the premium hubs are 180.95..... So I may wait a bit.... and it is cold outside!
Thanks again.

I have a 92 Ford Explorer, it whines, and jerks the wheel to the right. I was told by someone that it's a bad hub, I have had them apart and I see no aparent issues. Anyone have a problem like this, has anyone used the rebuild kit? I personally would see this as an excuse to change to Manuals, but it's my wife's truck, and I would prefer leaving them automatic if I can.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Jim
