The right turn signal on the instrument panel lights up when the lights are on, but not as bright as normal. I've traced it back to at least the cable, anyone have any suggestions? The wires in my truck are all different colors than in repair manuals so I'm having a hard time finding out where its shorting
EDIT the problems only on the instrument panel, the exterior lights work fine
Suggestion: Have you checked the bulb, socket, and/or circuit on the instrument cluster side? The socket might be making a bad connection to the circuit.
Keep us posted on this thread if you find a fix...Good luck!
Yea,
I just finished trouble shooting mine. 1979 f250. The right t-signal stayed illuminated when the lights were on. I located the problem with mine. The ground inside the light socket was rusted. The wiring seems bad inside the socket as well. I ran a ground wire to the exterior of the bulb where it should normally be grounded. The t-signal indicator on the instrument panel finally went out and the t-signal worked like it should. I'm replacing all the sockets on the outside lights. This socket looked good on the outside, but when I pulled on the wires,(like I was going to pull them out of the socket) the bulb would flicker on and off. I still cannot get the marker light to work. It will when the new one gets here.. Good luck. Hope I saved you some time, I wasted 2 or more hours!
Same problem with me, I had a "donor" 79 ford that I used to replace the part of the wiring harness that included the marker light on the side, the headlight wire and the turn signal wire. The problem was the bulb connector, as mathew106 stated, but I didn't want to splice any wires and I had a donor truck available for parts.
nope, nothing to do with the socket or ground, I'd already checked that.
I traced back the problem to the wiring harness so that rules out the IP since the power is being supplied.
As I said above the light stays illuminated, but not at full brightness. When the flasher is turned on it flashes on at full, but flashes off at the lower brightness. Because its not continuously flashing I think that the problem is between the flasher module and the end of the IP connector, but I don't want to tear out the cable if its something else.
BTW, anyone know if the connector can have cables removed and replaced, or will I have to splice it?
mathew106, try cleaning your marker light contacts, I had that problem too
I have a similar problem, when the headlights are off, the turn signal clicks very fast and illuminates very dull. When the headlights are on, both blinker lights shine very bright and stay on. My turn signals won't work at all with or w/o headlights, but my flashers work with the headlights off. Any ideas? Where are all the grounds located. It isn't the bulbs becuase I just repaced all of them, and I have tested all the sockets before I put new bulbs in.

found out last night that the connectors can be removed from the cable end. does anyone know where I can get more crimp connectors and the tool for those?
the running light is grounding through your turn signaland backfeeding to the dash indicator for a ground thats why the suide marker doesn,t work if you turn on your signal with the lights on you will see that the running light goes out when the light blinks c/o the socket soder the wires and use heat shrink on the connections the follow the black wire to its connection on the core support clean this up you can buy new sockets for about 5 bucks at most auto stores
My brake lights and turn signals work fine when my lights are off, but when I turn my lights on, my driver's side tail light is very dim and it completely goes out when I press on the brake. On the passenger side, when the lights are on, the tail light is so bright that it looks like my brakes are on.
When the lights are on, my driver's side turn signal works fine, but you can't see my passenger side signal because the tail light is so bright.
Inside, my right turn indicator on the dash doesn't work with lights on or off. I hear it click, but no flash is seen on the dash.
I'm not very mechanically inclined when it comes to vehicles, but this truck has gotten me used to a wrench in my hand. Any suggestions for this rookie?
plowpusher I know that on my truck there isn't a problem with the side markers after I cleaned the contacts, the rear lights were the only ones that went out
betsy1979, your passenger tail light might be lighting up incorrectly. The shorter filament is the brighter one and should be lit up during braking and signaling. Maybe some wires got crossed at the light or the harness? As far as the intrument panel light goes, theres lots of possibilities. You'd need to check the cable to see if the problem is there, but if theres power to the right lead then you've got a broken track on your PCB or a problem with the socket/lightbulb
Neh,
make sure you let us know what the problem turns out to be. Remember, I checked my socket too. But not good enough. I wasted alot of time by not messing with it long enough. Let me know what you find out.
