I have to replace the trans in my 94 XLT 4wd. I am a reasonable mechanic. I have replaced motors, trans Dif's etc in many cars in my past (before I had kids and I had the time). I am looking for a good write up on a Trans removal and replacement. I any tricks etc that you all have learned would be greatly appreciated. have a shop where we work on our race cars (I killed the Trans by towing a 7000 + trailer through the poconos in PA coming back from Summit point Race Park)
I have already got the books on the rebuild of the Trans and have read them cover to cover several times as I intend to rebuild my Trans once it is out.
I bought a 93 with a dead tranny with the same intentions you have. I have since changed my mind. I looked up a lot of stuff on the internet about screwball things you need to know about A4LD's. I then consulted a trans rebuild shop owner I'm professionally acquainted with about it. His opinion was that it was just about one of the worst trannies to rebuild. He said they do all the updates, upgrades, and do every check. Sometimes they STILL take a dump. He has had to give up on a couple and go buy another rebuildable core for the customers. Something he's never had to do with another tranny unless it was actually physically damaged. This shop works on just about everything, so he's seen a LOT of transmissions.
That was enough to scare me off. I've been into C4's, C5's, AOD's and some 4 and 5 speeds with pretty good luck so far. Not professionally but I'm sure not scared to crack one open. In the Explorer's case, I'll just pay the man. I believe a good guarantee to be worth the rebuild price. If it screws up, it's HIS problem. I know he'll stand behind it. Besides, as I mentioned, we have a business relationship and he'll do it half-price.
If you're feeling brave, here's some helpful info I turned up http://www.geocities.com/motorcity/flats/3349/a4ld.htm https://www.ford-trucks.com/AutoTrans.html http://www.sonnax.com/tech_all.htm
Good luck!
Thanks for the help!!!! I will read all that you have posted.
I was also wondering if there were any tricks to removing the Trans and transfer case from the truck. As I said above I have taken many transmissions out of cars before but I guess what is is making me hesitate is that this is 4WD and I have never taken one of these apart. Is there any tricks or posts/threads that you all know of that I can read up on this or is it just a matter of unbolting, unplugging, disconnecting and marking all the various parts etc. and lowering it out.
Yes, there are several good ideas when taking the tranny out. first unbolt the exhaust from the manifolds to right after the cats and get that out of the way. then unbolt both driveshafts, starter, and any other shields. then remove the tranny crossmember. if you do it like this, there wont be half as much swearing to reach the transfer case and bellhousing bolts. from here, its pretty much straightforward.
I found a Trans from a 92 ranger that had a 4.0l motor in it. It was a 2wd. The Trans looks like the exact same type. What I was wondering is.
I read some were that all you had to do to get a 2wd Trans to mate up in a 4X4 is to remove the rear housing and then bolt it to the transfer case. Is this true?? Otherwise it should work as it was bolted to a 4.0l motor so it should be able to take the hp and torque.
