Exclamation Need Starter Help

I have a question about starters, and I appreciate any and all input any one has.

Problem is the truck is getting harder to start as it gets cold. I cleaned the battery connections and got it to spin faster, but every time the motor is about to light off, the starter drive kicks out with a loud whirring noise. Before I chew up my flywheel, and not knowing the history of the truck, I went down to the parts store and picked up a full life time starter, but it is different!

The starter in my truck has an integrated solenoid, and is more compact, perhaps 8 inches to bell housing flange from end of starter.

The new starter has a seperate solenoid connected to the starter motor with a short length of battery cable and is quite long- over 10 inches from bell housing flange. It is stamped "Mitsu" and looks like it has the Mitsubishi (sp.) logo on it.

I looked at other posts, but never found any specifics on the two different starters.

****Is there any difference between the old starter in my truck and this new "Mitsu" starter? Which one, if both were brand new, is better? Should I get one that looks like the old one, or is this replacement just as good or better then what is in there now (If the old one is rebuilt)*****

As anyone that has changed a starter knows it is no easy task so I was hoping for a heads up from ya'll!

THANKS

They are the same, they just look different. I have had both of them on mine. They are both gear reduction starters. They spin the motor very well. The other option is a Delco direct drive starter. It is a lot larger in diameter. I have never tried one of those, but was told I did not want to try one either.
The logo is Mitsubishi. I found it easier to put the long one in bolt wise, harder to hook up the wires, and you have to turn it just right to get it in the hole because of the crossmember.

what year is the truck, and what size engine is in it? i have a 1990 f-250 with the 7.3 liter, and i had troubles with the starter a few months ago, when i went to the parts place they gave me the starter that the truck called for, but the one that i needed was a second production starter! so mabe the one that you need is diffrent. if the one that you have doesnt bolt in then i would take the old one to the store and have them match it up in a book! good luck, and hope every thing goes ok

All good info, I am a new owner of a 94 F350 7.3 turbo diesel. I loaded up the back with lumber from the local Home Depot, and tried to start the truck, but no go. The positive batter cable was very corroded, and the batteries are 4 years old. I just thought I didn't have enough juice to turn it over. After replacing the $96.00 batter cable and both batteries, still no go.

Any advice on what the issue might be now? The starter never spins, the glow plugs glow, and there is some clicking but no joy.

I feel like it is the starter, but any advice on how to test it, or has anybody had the started just DIE, no advance notice, no whirring, etc?
