might have to test JT's "pull it through the front" procedure...i just bought an 88 Eddie Bauer (sp?) advertised as "bad motor"..they where asking $ 350, i picked it up for $ 275. body and interior are in decent condition...and appears to have been well kept otherwise...new bushings in variuos locations on the front end, nice clean tranny fluid. they say it ran hot on day, then quit running...a "mechanic friend" of theirs started messing with it and left it appart, and it's been sitting for about 6 months...somehow, the end of the exhaust manifold on the passenger side is broken off...that will be fun...i'm working through some electrical issues with it right now...the 2 large connectors near the solenoid area, and 2 relay connectors have alot of exposed wires at the base of the connectors...cleaning it up, gooping it up with liquid electrical tape, then re-taping the wires...i dont even want to connect the battery till this is done...i'll have the check for bad fusible links i'm sure...then i'll start touble shooting the motor...on first glance, the oil looks and smells normal. I know this purchase is a gamble, but i figure i could make $ 275 at least parting it out if it doesn't work out.
Well, it had good fuel pressure and spark...primed it with a little fuel, thinking maybe the injectors werent workin...still nothing. I started thinking maybe timing ? Brought it to TDC on #1 and checked the position of the rotor....noticed it was way behind...rotated the crankshaft pulley...it went about 20 degrees in either direction before turning the distributor rotor...so guess what...yanked the timing cover..the cam gear and the chain were extemely worn. I didnt want to put any money into this thing just yet, so i pulled the timing gears and chain from the parts car, slapped it back together just enough to run it...and SHE FIRED RIGHT UP !
un-believable
It was to darn loud with that broken exhaust manifold to hear if it had a knock or anything.
I going to fix that now...
