03 Expy Tow Pack

I am in the process of buying a new trailer for my boat, that will come with hydraulic surge brakes and require a five flat plug. I do have the 7-wire rv plug on the Expy, does anyone know if it is wired up for a reverse lockout solenoid so I can just buy an adaptor, or am I gonna have to do some "custom wiring"?

Your exedition should have come with an adaptor to give you a five flat plug. If not, you can make one or buy one at any RV shop.

No solenoid is needed or expected on the surge brake system it is purely mechanical in operation.

To back up a hill with the hydraulic surge brakes, just stick a screw driver or bolt through the mechanizm to prevent it's being jammed back and activating the brakes when you back up. then remove it after parking or when ready to travel forward again.

On most (maybe all) trailers with surge brakes the reverse lockout solenoid is simply activated by the backup lights.

On my 03 it came with the round 7 plug AND the flat 5. Look carefully under the round 7. Mine has a rubber plug in it that constantly gets knocked out.

My boat trailer has a manual "backup" lever that I simply pull when I need to back uphill. I really only trailer 2 times a season (in and out) so not worth the effort of adding the solenoid to my trailers surge system.

Ok, mine has the 7round and a 4flat.....I trailer practically every Sat and Sun, with a few out of state trips coming up each year for rallies and tournements (hence upgrading from my 01 Explorer to a larger vehicle)...I just wasn't sure if the Expys were wired with a wire from the reverse lights to the 7round or not....Guess it can't hurt to crawl under it and look...

My current trailer does not have brakes and has a 4flat plug, but I am looking at buying a new trailer with brakes in the next months or so...

Thank ya'll....Glad I found this place.

The 7 round has a backup light connection. I used it for my backup lockout solenoid before I converted the surge brakes to electric over hydraulic.

If you look real close at the hinged cover on the 7 pin connector, it has the pinouts stamped on it.

I have an O3 Expediton and a Four Winns trailer that uses a flat five wire connection . The fifth wire works to open a sol. valve to release presure in the surge brake system for the trailer when backing up. I had a local trailer place make an adapter to go from the round connection on the Expy to the flat 5 wire connection on the trailer. Since then I have seen(can't remember where, sorry) a adapter already made and ready to use. The fifth wire has power when shifting into reverse, I believe it works on the back-up lights system. Hopes this helps.
