Hello all, I am new to this board and seeking your help.
I have 1994 f-150 5.0 2WD w/M50d, 3.73 rear gears. I have installed edelbrock 6037 heads, bassani headers and Y pipe, along with their 3" single system. I also pulled the stock cam and installed a crane compucam roller 208/216 @.050" .533 lift. I have made no mods to the stock speed density fuel injection other than a mallory adjustable fuel press reg. For the most part driveability is pretty much as smooth as stock except for part throttle cruise @ 50-65 mph where the engine seems to surge slightly. I have pulled the plugs and come to the conclusion that I'm running lean during cruise.
My question is, can I use the lightning conversion kit with its 30lb injectors and 80mm MAF. Or should I go with the standard 5.0 kit w/small MAF and stock 19lb injectors.
Thanks in advance for your input.
With the mods you have done I would definetly put bigger injectors in, such as 24 lb injectors, and a mass air sensor. Being that you have all those other mods it would really pay to get a bigger than stock maf senser such as a 70 or 75mm, a 80mm is to big and is more for forced induction engines.
I read in a Ford EFI modification book that the 19lb fuel system is good up to 300HP. Ford Motorsport says up to 290HP. I don't think with your modifications your above that power. I would just get the 5.0 Mass air kit. Even if you are planning on more modifications like a new block, higher comp. ratios, bigger cam, supercharging, turbo ect... you can add the bigger throttle body, injectors and MAF later if you need them. I believe the Lightning kit is for the E40D tranny only and will not work with what you have correctly anyway. The lightning kit is almost twice the cost also. I have friends that are running 9.5:1, 306cu/in engines with E303 cams, aftermarket heads, aftermarket intakes, larger headers ect... that are using the stock fuel systems accept for fuel pump and adding adjustable fuel pressure regulators with no problems and hitting projected HP ratings.
I'll look into getting the 5.0 conversion kit then. The info I have found so far, says the FMS-M9000T50 kit is for the 87 thru 93 trucks.
I wonder if this has anything to do with the 94's having a airbag system? Does anyone know if the 94 powertrain computer runs the SRS also?
The airbags are independent of the engine computer. Some '94 trucks are mass air from the factory which may have something to do with the kit year range. There may be a couple differences in the wiring for the computer, but check a wiring diagram to be sure there's no difference for the engine harness between a '93 and a '94.
I believe that in 94 only cali emissions vehicles with automatic trans got MAF...and in 95 regular emissions vehicles with automatic got MAF...and in 96 all got MAF. My 95 is still speed density because i have a manual transmission.
The conversions for the 93-95 Lightnings are for E4OD trannys.
If the cam you're using is speed density friendly (or if it can produce enough vacuum) then I wouldn't worry about spending the money on a Mass Air Conversion... a chip from a good tuner, should be able to burn a chip so that you get the most out of your combo and it'll still have good idle/cruise manners.
