Does anyone know of a convienent switched 12v power source that I could run a relay from? I am wiring in a power inverter and I want something a little more permanent than the cigarette lighters. I am planning on mounting the inverter behind the rear seat.
Jim,
I originally had the same thought but then decided I wanted the power full time if needed.
I ran 4g battery cables, (through a 30 amp fuse), directly from the battery to the inverter. I can run a drill or saw or even an incandescent light if I want and not worry about cooking the 16g wire under the dash.
Mostly the thing runs a small DVD player or game thingy while traveling but well you know, anything worth doing is worth overdoing.
If I run directly from the battery and hard wire it in, won't the inverter run continously? I thought these critters run even when something is not plugged into them? If they don't GREAT! If they do, at the very least I would need a switch. I am afraid that the youngins would leave a switch on. That is why I was thinking of using a relay.
My inverter, (750 watt), has a switch panel with off/on and a fan. I looked at the little one I carry in the car and it does not. I'm guessing the little ones, (less than 150 watts); do run continuously when plugged in.
The cigar lighter, (#3 fuse on my '99), does have a 20A fuse if you want to tap for a link.
