Anyone out there tried 20" or 22" wheels on their F150??? Looking to purchase either one and was wondering how the ride was with the bigger wheel and shorter tires. Right now I have 255/60/16 on my 2001.
well the ride is going to be worse. i wouldn't put wheels on that big. i think 18" look big enough but thats just me. 20" or 22" seems like a waste, and get easially damaged. but it's your ride and i say try it if you like the looks, i don't think 22" will fit but i don't know for sure.
I just read an article that said that 18's are as big as you can go without sacrificing ride quality due to such a short sidewall on the tire. They also said anything 20 or above greatly reduces handling, acceleration and braking due to the extra unsprung weight of the huge tires and rims. I think the article was in Road and Track or Motor Trend. They also said the engineers for the big 3 get nervous at anything over a 20 cuz they weigh too much and put too much stress on axle's and suspension pieces.
I don't know about that one, I don't think a larger rim/smaller sidewall will be much weight difference. It will make the ride a little bumpy, but it will handle better around corners and ususally the type of tire used on those wheels will help traction for braking and acceleration.
The larger the rim is the heavier, proven fact. Unsprung weight saps TONS of horspower. Yes, you have more traction with the larger contact patch provided by the larger tire, but you also have a lot more inertia to start/stop with the added weight. Larger tires will help cornering (provided you buy quality tires), but for acceleration and braking they are a hindrance.
Dodge puts a 275X55X20 on their Ram 1500, you would think that the 20" wheel on a Ford truck would act the same as a Dodge?? I'm not to worried about the extra weight but I would like to keep the ride close to what it is now.
rams were designed to take that wheel though. i think you might be ok, but you will feel a difference. i would really think about 18" you will save more money in the long run. and i think be happier with the ride.
