After 13K miles on my '03 Ranger 3.0L V6 I decided to switch from Motorcraft blend 5W-20 to Amsoil XL7500 5W-20 synthetic. All seemed fine with the Amsoil in the crankcase until I noticed blue smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe apon start up some 3K miles later. No noticeable oil consumption other than the visible smoke.
Changed out the Amsoil and went back with the Motorcraft blend 5W-20. Blue smoke on start up ENDED over the next 500 miles into the Motorcraft oil. Originally went with the full synthetic for additional "metal on metal" wear protection instead of the blend.
Full synthetics do provide better protection for "metal on metal" wear but a very important fact is that engine oil ALSO conditions seals and gaskets (other non-metal engine elements) and that point can easily be overlooked when selecting oils.
Did Amsoil leave out seal or gasket conditioning qualities that other synthetics or Motorcraft Blend have?
Just sharing my Amsoil experience. I continue to use Motorcraft blend 5W-20 as it seems to be receiving good remarks here in this forum. Still thinking of trying other Synthetics.
Not sure, but good point though. I looked at Amsoil before switching to Mobil 1. I looked through most of it, and with the 25,000 mile oil change BS, its almost too good to be true. And usually things that you think are, they almost always in fact are. Id rather pay the expensive $5.00 / quart for Mobil 1 than risk my $5000 engine.
Well, for starters, the Amzoil that you used is a dino GP III synthetic not a PAO basestock like M1. Amzoil usually has the lowest NOACK of all oils so your experience is most likely the exception rather than the rule. The M1 in the viscosity of 5w-20 is the weakest of all the 5w-20's in the fact that the HT/HS is at 2.6 which is absolute minimum for an oil to stay in grade and spec. While there are many good synthetics on the market this isn't one of tham. Move to a different viscosity, say 5w-30 and the story changes. This is true of almost any product you buy, not everything a specific manufacturer makes will be good. Some products are exceptional while others from the same manufacturer are crap. Buyer beware.
Oh yeah, if ya just want to spend the bucks, Redline has the highest published HT/HS rating at 3.3 in the 5w-20's. It is not intended for extended oil changes. Your Motorcraft which is a blend is rated 2.85 HT/HS.
