Is there a quick visual way to tell if I have a DANA 50 up front over the 44? The tag on the axle is gone, and I am trying to order a manual hub conversion kit which is either for the DANA 44 or the DANA 50 + 60. I think they are all 10 bolt....
There is literally a "50" cast into the back of the pumpkin so my common sense is leaning that way, but I have run into stranger debacles on this truck.
I have a 96 F250 4X4 and the GVWR is 8,600. I have read that on a rare occasion some trucks like this received the 8 lug DANA 44 on the front.
dont bet on it too fast that it is a 50. i have seen more 44's then 50's. all ya need to do is pull up to a half ton 4x4 and compare hub sizes. if yers is bigger the you have a dana 50, if its the same size, its a 44. i know that the 50 has a 50 cast into the housing. i think it inside of the housing though, i just dont remember. hope that helps ya out.
I'd say, If you have a full-floatationg rearend (the kind that sticks through the wheel) then you prolly have an F-250HD like mine!
Order the manual locking hub for the Dana 50, cuz that's what you've got! Mine has a "50" casted into the rear of the pumpkin as well (you can see it when you are crawling around pulling the oil filter off).
Also, like mentioned in previous posts, the "normal" or "lightduty" F-250 (without the big rearend) has an F-150-sized front hub.
***NOTE: I HAVE seen lightduty 250's with the full floatating rearend though! (prolly happens when you order the camper package or somethin) and I've also seen the lightduty 250's with the dana 50 frontend (when you order the plow package or something).
But I'm sure it's a dana 50.. If not, return the part and reorder!!
Also, another visual way to see if it's the dana 50 or 44 is to look at the axle shaft on the passenger shaft. If the u joint holding the two pieces of the shaft together is the type with a clip at the end of the u joint cap (like the u joints that are on your drivelines) then it's a 50. the 44s will have the u joint where the clip is on the inside of the cap. Good luck
