My main problem is that the truck will hardly idle when cold. at running temp, the idle is perfect. There seem to be a lot of problems with the IAC from reading this forum, and talking to my ford dealer, but when I had the check engine codes read, the upstream o2 sensor was out of range, and there was a problem with the egr valve. could these codes be caused by an iac problem? does the cold idle problem, but warm idle ok sound like an iac?
what about the ECT? How about the IAT? Will an electrical test on each of these tell me what my problem is?
The IAC, ECT and IAT look relatively easy to get to. That o2 in front of the catalytic converter looks like a bear.
thanks for info in advance.
EGR's can cause problems that are especially dependent on engine(especially exhaust manifold) temperatures and lead to idle problems. The pintle can be cleaned fairly easily; the operating rod may be jamming at cold temps. in which case a new EGR may be in the offing.
i'm about to go to the garage and check the EGR and IAC. the good news is that both of those are easy to replace. i'm sort of a novice, and have a low tolerance for real knucklebusters. those 2, however, look like a piece of cake.
thanks a lot.
You might want to save some time and money by performing an easy test first: get some carb cleaner and spray the area where the black plastic intake manifold mates to the aluminum cylinder heads( do this with a cold engine). If the engine reacts by smoothing out, or reving up a bit then you have vacuum leaks at the intake gaskets, a VERY common problem on the 4.0 sohc. There is an extended warranty for 1997-2001 explorers with that engine that replaces those gaskets and the front cam chain tensioner as long as your vehicle has less than 72,000 miles and six years of age. As a reference, a friend paid $330.00 to have it done at a dealer
