Overheating

I have a 99 ranger 4.0 automatic. When I first start it every morning it warms up to the normal temp. Then after about 1 or 2 minutes it overheats and the "Chech Guage" light comes on (for the heat guage). The after 10-15 seconds it goes back to normal operating temp and never heats up again. It only does it when the engine is cold. I heard about a "quick Warm-up" hose that re-re-routes water bach to the block before it gets to the radiator. Could this cause the problem? How can i fix it? And by the way thanx for your help op my cruise control problem. I fixed it.

Welcome to FTE!!

I would start with replacing the thermostat and making sure it full of coolant.
