Usually when a modulator leaks trans fluid, it swells the normally tight hose and it then slips off, this leaking modulator could also cause a shifting problem like you mentioned, as well as the loss in fluid you also mentioned.
That would make me more than a little suspicious and willing to assume it's bad and toss a few dollars at getting a new one!

I think my modulator just needs to be tightended, but I have not foud a thin wrench yet. Who designed this thing?

what do I use for a tranny temp gauge and how do I mount it? I have only found oil/water temp gauges that mount in a threaded bung like in the intake manifold.

BTW, when did we get moved? :-) It took me forever to find my post.

The leak I mentioned would be internal from the diaphragm, and there is no way to tighten it.

I put up som pics of my custom cooler install. So far, no leaks!

I'd still like to get a gauge setup, but not sure what to use and where/how to install.

They install in front of the radiator so they use the engines fan to draw air through it.
BTW, why do you think you need a stand alone cooler/fan for the trans?
Is the trans drag raced or used in truck pulls?
Also, if the cooler lines go through the engine radiator after the stand alone cools the fluid, and it cools it enough, the engine will just warm it up again.

There are three ways to plumb it.
1: Trans, trans cooler, radiator.
2: Trans, radiator, trans cooler.
3: Trans, trans cooler (assuming its big enough to do the job alone).
I would go with #1 if it hauled real heavy loads all the time (working truck) especially in a real cold climate to assure it stays warm enough to evaporate any moisture in the fluid.

I had a couple concerns running the lines up front. It's difficult to get there without getting close to the exhaust plumbing and headers. The engine radiator on my vehicle has an almost full size A/C radiator also mounted to it. I thought 3 layers was a bit restrictive. And my electric engine cooling fan has it's own shroud, making it difficult to put the fan on the inside, and the AC cooler on the outside.

I figured a short run of tubing not parallel with the exhaust through a stand alone cooler would be adequate, especially with it's own fan!

We'll see.

Be careful (even on a seemingly clean road) with it mounted horizontally like that so mud, leaves and other trash does not build up down there where you cant see it until the trans smokes it's self!
Perhaps a more protected place mounted vertically?
And I never liked the trans cooler lines next to the exhaust like on the stock set up.
Route it over the trans and along the other side.
Some times the fan is shrouded because it's so far away from the radiator that there might be room to mount it there?
I have done a few between the fan and radiator and they worked fine (with plenty of room to spare).
