When I ordered my 2003 XLT dually, I opted for the CD6 stereo under the impression it would "shuffle" or randomly play all six CDs. Not so! Apparently there is a change up for '03, and the unit will store 6 CD's but only "shuffle" the tracks on the selected CD and not all 6.
The stereo tech at the local Ford dealer said this was due to a problem with the '02 and older units jamming on rough roads, and he recommended against using the older units because of all the problems.
I paid over $300.00CDN for this option that doesn't work as expected. Anyone else experienced this? Am I being told the truth?
My '01 would not shuffle between disks... I don't think any of the model years have. Also never had a problem on rough roads. In fact, none of my Ford CD players (3 trucks) has ever skipped- while my GMC player skips just going down my driveway!
Hmm....I have a 2002...and my 6 CD changer does indeed shuffle both between songs on one disc and also shuffles between discs. I can't believe that 2002 is the only year that does that. Now, someone I ride with works for FORD and did note that these changers aren't the greatest. They get alot of repair requests..I have experienced trouble with mine in that sometimes it doesn't want to eject the discs. I've had to kind of bump the disc that's in the slot with a small screwdriver to get it to eject.
I just have a shuffle button that I hit and it comes up with options of shuffle off, shuffle track or shuffle disc. I hit shuffle disc and away I go...it plays songs from all discs randomly. I wouldn't be too happy either if the shuffle disc option is gone...the whole point to a 6 CD changer is to load that baby up and listen to random music for hours and hours.. So what's the deal????
Lisa
Lisa, my unit only offers two choices when the "SHUF" feature is selected......."shuffle trk" or "shuffle off". Given this, I have to beleive the '03 version is not meant to randomly play all 6, and you're right, one would think the CD6 would offer hours and hours of music.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 02-Dec-02 AT 05:34 PM (EST)]I can shuffle between disks on the CD-6 in my 2002 as well. It operates just as Lisa described above. I did run into an issue where it would not eject cd's, and the only way to extract them was with a tweezers or needle nose pliers. Had it replaced under warranty and the new one has been working A-OK, but it sure doesn't sound too healthy. Lots of "clunking" goes on in there while changing disks. The serviceman at the dealership said that there are over 30 different versions of the 6-disk in dash changer. Because of this I had to take my truck in to the dealership so they could get the numbers off the back, wait for them to order one, and then take the truck in again once my new unit arrived. Perhaps you have one of the versions that does not have the disk shuffle feature?

2002 F-250 Supercab shortbox, BFT package, 4X4 off-road, V10, 3.73LS, 3" Performance Accessories Body Lift, 285/75R16 Bridgestone Dueller AT's, 40 series flowmaster, K&N air filter, Berlin hydraulic assist soft tonneau cover, Ford mud flaps, bug shield, and bed mat
On a somewhat related side note, if you burn your own CD's, don't stick one of those full circle labels on the disc. The combined thickness of the disk and labels will jamb the changer. I've completely dissected mine to get the disk out!
Interesting. I had to try this in my 2001, and here is what I found:
Each time I press SHUF, I get one of the following:
- Shuffle Disc
- Shuffle Trk
- Shuffle Off
Shuffle Disc does indeed randomly go thru all 6 CD's and pick
a track to play. I never use this feature, so I had to try it after
reading this thread. I then called my Ford sales rep. and he had
not heard of the Shuffle Disc not working before, but he did say
(as others pointed out) that home-made discs with paper labels
would cause problems.
Not sure this is helpful to you, but man, I would complain loudly
if your new '03 unit does not shuffle CD's.
I don't want to come of as a smart a$$ here, I'm just trying to make a point so that people can maybe give this some thought when they're ordering their next truck.
Do you realize that you paid over a $1000 CAN for your Ford stereo system?
When I ordered my truck I took the CD delete option so the truck just came with a cassette/radio like the XL models. It saved me $730. The upgrade from the standard CD to the 6 disc changer system was another $300.
I figured I'd be able to do a much better job spending a $1000 on stereo equipment than Ford. I'm not a stereo guy by any means, but I'm pretty sure that for a $1000 I could have a pretty damn good system installed in my truck.
IMHO I think ford would be better off using a CD player that can play MP3's. You wouldn't need to have a 6 disk changer to have hours and hours of music. You can fit almost 100 hours of music on a single, one, CD in MP3 format. Some will say the quality isn't as good, but I can't tell. To me it's atleast as good as radio (air) quality.
Suppose maybe I should ask now if the single CD play will play MP3 format???
Waxy, I am not sure where you got your numbers from, but the $1000 figure seems high even in Canadian $. According to the Edmunds new vehicle pricing site, the CD deletion will save you $190 MSRP and the 6CD option would cost $210 MSRP, a total difference of $400 US dollars.

Bugtussle,
I'm positive on these numbers. Check out www.Ford.ca and go through the build and price procedure if want to check it out for yourself. I don't know where Edmunds get their info, but this is straight from the horse's mouth.;-)
Here's the info, I just copied and pasted it from the site.
Audio
Radio: Prem. ETR AM/FM Stereo w/Cass/CD
Includes clock, premium sound with amplifier and 4-speakers. included
Radio: ETR AM/FM Stereo w/Cassette/Clock
Deletes standard single CD. Includes 4-speakers. -$730
Radio: Prem. ETR AM/FM Stereo w/6-Disc CD Changer
Does not include cassette. Includes clock. $230
Works out to $960 +tax by my calculation. I bet the salesman's face at your local car audio shop would light up if you walked in and told him you wanted to spend $1000.
My guess is your face would light up too when you heard what $1000 sounds like.
I recently (in Nov.) purchased a 2003 SD 250 PS. On the vehicle description it listed a PREM ELEC AM/FM STER/6 DISC CD at $210.00. It will shuffle tracks on a CD but will not shuffle among the other CD's.
