Lightbulb Oil Pan?

Hi all,

Does anyone know where I can buy a rear sump oil pan? I've looked high and low and nothing...all I find is for a front sump, but I don't think it will fit my truck.

Thanks!

All the 4X4s came with rear sump I do believe. Not sure if they will clear all the stuff in a 2WD truck.

Don't think it will clear 2wd either. The steering runs back across there and it would definitely get in the way.

Most all 4wd had front steering, so rear sump had all kinds of room.

Oops...sorry if I did not clarify. My truck is a 4x4.

Do you think a front sump will fit? If so, what would be involved to change from a rear sump to a front?

Appreciate your input...

Keep the rear sump cuz if you are climbing a hill or speeding down a road your oil pickup will stay in the oil..Check ebay and the junk yards, they shouldn't be that hard to find..JMO..

Thanks for the advise! I checked ebay and several are offered. However I was looking for a "new" larger capacity alum pan with the cool fins. At least I can get a replacement pan...

They make several rear sump aftermarket pans with extra capacity. Dinosaurfan lost an FE in his 4X4 a long time ago becasue he went with a front sump. Look at moroso's site and there are some more manufacturers but I forgot them. Maybe Canton is the name.

Hey Thanks Ratsmoker!!!

I found a Canton oil pan that will work perfectly. Here is the info for any interested FE folks.

http://www.streetrodstuff.com/Products/1587/

Part #: cp16-870 - Rear Sump High capacity Truck Pan (332-428)

Description: This increased capacity rear sump pan was designed for FE applications. This pan was also designed to install FE engines in 79 and Mustangs and T-Birds. Features slosh baffle and provision for pan mounted dipstick. The 8" deep sump provides a 7qt system capacity. Use #16-871 pickup and #20-850 universal dipstick.

??Question: Do you think it would be a good idea to replace the stock oil pump with a high volume oil pump? If so, what brand do you recommend?

Thanks again!

A high volume pump will put more oil in the top of the motor, bad if you don't have the restrictors...

Good info... I am currently running a front sump, because my 390 came out of a 2WD. Methinks I need to be changing that.

Is there anything else that needs to be bought along with the oil pan? Pickup tube, etc?

Just out of curiousity, why is it bad to have a HV pump w/o the restrictors?

Yes. But usually they explain that with the pan. Something like "Recommended" or "must purchase oil pickup #___ with pan #___".

If you are going with an original pan (from ebay for example) make sure to check that it comes with the pickup. Some do...some do not.

Hey there,
I have the factory fe 4x4 pan in my truck, but it's beat to hell- showing the signs of several rods thrown through it and looks like a big rock took it's toll also. half the pan is welds to fix holes The pan leaks like a siv where the dipstick goes in too. This pan is trashed and I need a new one. I've looked at the canton pan and it's an ugly as hell dual sump piece of crap- doesn't anybody make a nice cad plated rear sump pan identicle to the factory 4x4 pan? I really don't want to buy another 30 year old pan that has the same problems as mine for half the price of a new straight and shiny one.

The high volume pump will put more oil to the top of the motor, which is already a problem with the FE. Using the restrictors will keep it in the bottom end where it does more good. IMHO, if you are building serious power (above 400hp) then a HV pump is probably necessary, other than that, a regular quality pump with the oil mods should do you well...
