Angry Dropping MPG

Over the last couple of days I have notices that on the overhead, my MPG have been dropping fast. I usually average about 11 or so on the overhead, and today it's down to 9.2

Does anyone know what might cause this. Where should I start looking first for a solution?

Thanks in advance for any info.

Yep, that will help drop it, so will a dirty air filter, under-inflated tires, your fan clutch being stuck on, emergency brake or any brakes dragging, thermostat being stuck open, leaving the transmission in low (nyuck, nyuck, that's a silly one) and others. If it has been dropping throughout 1 tank of gas, it may the brand of gas, and/or oxygenation of said fuel. But if 2 weeks ago it was, say 12, a day later it was 11, a day later it was 10 and you're using gas from different people, it sounds like a mechanical problem. Especially if it's still dropping. But if it WAS 12, and now it's 10.5, and stable, it surely is oxygenated fuel. Or alcohol like is used out here in the west along with oxygenation.

I lose about 2 mpg (averaged over a tank) this time every year. It comes back when the weather warms up.

cold air means dense air and that means more fuel can be added. The up side is more power as well.

I agree but don't you think he would have noticed it every winter? Provided of course, that he has always lived in the same climate..

Hey guys - Thaks for the info....

I just got my X this summer, so this is my first winter with it.
I'll just keep an eye on it and see what happens. It's fallen to about 9.5 but hasn't dropped any lower....yet.

Well not exactly true, give me 4 valves per cylinder and dual overhead cams with about 500 horsepower and 600 ft lbs of torque in an all wheel drive, 15 passenger van with a seven speed automatic and let it get about 30 miles per gallon and I know I'D be happy !!

Welllllllll doggies! I could live with that and Half the mileage you want. Not interested in having it a school bus though, I'll take it in a Mustang, a Crown Vic, or a SD.

yea no doubt, but I'd have to leave some of the kids at home, so for now at least I can only look, and dream of the day when; "hi dad, my first semester at college was great. No I'm not planning on moving home anytime soon, I'm really happy here. And I've already been offered a job with XYZ company and they've offered me lots of money so you and mom just go ahead and stay in Mexico another month. I'm fine and do not need anything at all. Go catch some more fish, have another margarita. How are you doing with your new 500 hp, SVT Mustang convertible that you towed behind your V-10 motorhome to Baja ?" We all need goals,,,,,

I don't know about you but I have a looooooooooong time before I can get anywhere near that. I have 5 kids. The oldest is 12, the youngest is 3. I don't know about fishing in Mexico either, all I am looking for is one day of quiet. Just one day without, "Dad, Hunter hit me. Dad, Reid colored on his bedroom wall again. Dad, Jon Paul threw a football and broke a lamp. Dad, Katie mixed her Brats stuff up with my Barbie stuff. Dad, Krista won't let me have my Game Boy back". I think that covered all 5. That is what I have to look forward to from the time I get home from work, until they are all asleep. Of course, my wife hears it too. Much worse than me, she's also the chauffer.

Maybe we should get a school bus. We are shopping right now as a matter of fact. We are getting rid of the Windstar, looking at X's and Expeditions. I don't think Mexico and fishing are in my near future. However, Margaritas may be.

Here's the biggest thing that sold me on the 15 passenger van, and I never haul 13 people around. There are FOUR, yep, FOUR rows of seats not counting the front two. So each kid can have their own row. That stops alot of "DAD ! Kenny hit me again". DAD! Hanna took my Gameboy and won't give it back". I have a drop-down 7.2 inch LCD TV about a third of the way back, and a 6.5 inch LCD TV right up front. I have an X-Box/DVD player on one, and a Playstation/DVD player on the other. So there can be 2 movies playing at once. And I have wireless and wired headphones. It can be darned quiet for looooonnnnngggggg periods of time when we're on a road trip. Plus each kid can bring along a friend, and share their seat, so when we do get to our camp site the kids all have a buddy to hang with. And there's not so much "can you go bike riding with me, will you play catch with me, will you go for a walk with me" ? I still like to do all those things of course with the kids, but not 24/7. I have 6 kids, ages 10 thru 22, with 4 still home. But I tell ya, having a whole row for each kid sure makes a difference, even if I can't have AWD, YET.
