What will happen if I remove the cat. coverter from the system and just ran duals, would the brain freak out? I am in a non smog tested area so no regs would apply. Thanks.
What would be the advantage of removing the cats?? Just wondering why you'd do it - there's basically no HP to be gained and it would freak out the computer a bit. Even though you're not in a smog-tested area, it's not a good idea to pollute when you don't need to.
Well I am trying to dodge replacing the one I got which i feel is plugging up...that was the reasoning, but I will replace it if there are no performance advantages in removing it.
Your check engine light would come on and stay on. The Cats in the Expy are the least restrictive Cats available, and it's true you would see very liitle to no gain in exhaust increase.
No adbantage at all, and it's a federal coast to coast law that you must have cats on the exhaust. Polluting the air happens whether testing is done or not.
I'd be very suprised if you saw a 5hp gain from cutting both cats... Not to mention the fact it would play with your air/fuel ratio a little, be illegal, have more of a chance of backflow (backfire) etc..
Also, you could probably add 15-20 HP to my truck and I wouldn't know the difference simply because it's so heavy.

The PCM is gonna notice that the post-cat O2 sensor is reading the same as the pre-cat O2 sensor, indicating that the cat is not consuming any oxygen, and it will light the MIL. The PCM may go into limp-home-mode and then you'll notice a drop off in performance..
Ok i am CONVINCED that i should replace it if faulty and not just cut it off. I was just curious to see if performance would be increased without a serious blow to the environment but I was wrong. Thanks for all the input.

Hey Southpark, removing the cats won't affect the air/fuel ratio. All the "downstream" O2 sensors do is monitor the effectiveness of the cats, but won't change the engine settings....this is accomplished by the upstream sensors.
I don't know how free flowing the cats are in today's vehicles, but I've gotta believe that they add some sort of restriction to the flow. I remember in the early '70 when they first started putting cats on passenger cars, those things would nearly choke to death any V8 made.
i have a 98 expy. and i just had the mufflers removed the cats are enough to dampen the sound...this expy sounds so sweet you would not believe it...i also have all three in pipe cat back..alot better then having duels which are very hard to squeeze past the gas tank....
