I have a 91 Explorer 4X4 which I only paid $500 for. I am having 4X4 probs. I took off and cleaned the elecrtic motor on the back of the transfer case because i couldn't get the 4X4 to engage. I now have 4 high, but no 4 low. the front drive shaft spins in 4 high, but no power to the front wheels. Any help would be greatful.
If the front axles are spinning, but no power is transferred to the wheels, I would suspect the hubs. the auto hubs that came stock on these are known to break.
As for shifting into 4L, you have to have your foot on the brake, be stopped, and the transmission selector in N (not P or any other position). If your doing all of those things, check the switch.
I have a 93 Ex, which I only paid 1200.00 for, and same problem. I'm glad I cleaned the motor, as I know how to do it, and replace if need be. I also traced the problem to the hubs, which, as stated before, are a fairly common problem. I took mine apart and cleaned them, and sure enough, there were some broken parts. I'm saving up for the Warn manual locking hubs, which after research, seem to be the only way to go. I know after taking the hubs apart that I can replace them both in a few hours, easily. If you decide to go with the Warn's hubs, the standard hub is part #29071 and the necessary conversion kit is #32720. As for price, the best I've found new is online at $180 for both, but I'm still looking and E-Bay has one currently at $115, but I'm still waiting on my paycheck. Hope I've helped.
Thanks for your help. i checked my hubs today and noticed that they are not engaging. They feel like they slip constantly. I did not find any broken parts, but noticed that the cetrifical locking mechanism seems to be worn badly. Going to replace them with manuals. I'll let you know if that solves the problem!
Yep you got hub problems. I service mine 2x a year and since I have started this I have not had any problems with the 4x4 system. The 4x4 system in the explorers is a good system but require a bit more service than the manual says. The major thing that I have seen is that the grease in the hubs dries out and then all kinds of problems can occur. Another problem is a lack of use. Letting them sit all summer and then expecting them to work with out a hitch during the first snow is asking for problems.
My service includes cleaning the hubs completely in solvent and then set them in a bucket of Lucas oil treatment, antiseas and synthetic gear oil. While they are sitting there I will grease the barrings and replace the pads. I then install the hubs "wet" with a table spoon or so added to the inside of the cover (make sure that the o-ring is in good shape otherwise it will leak out). This has been working for me for the last three years with out a problem.
Wondering if you found a solution to your 4x low problem. I'm experiencing the same thing in a 1991 I just bought. Already did the suggested repairs mentioned here, hi working fine, low still not.
Four conditions have to be met in order to shift from 4H to 4L:
1) Vehicle stopped.
2) Foot on brake.
3) Transmission in N (not P or any other range).
4) Push and hold button.
If that all checks out and the shift motor is clean, then there is an electrical fault between the switch and the shift motor. The control module (driver's rear quarter panel just forward of the rear washer fluid reservoir/pump) has a simple self-test feature. You press a little button and an LED will either flash or glow steady. I can never remember the significance of the output, but it basically can tell if there's a problem with the module, or the shift motor (try a search and see if you can find a thread where this has been discussed before).
