For the last two weeks I've had an intermittent "Service Engine Soon" light on my 2002 Explorer. I went to AutoZone and they pulled the code. It was P1400 "DPFE EGR Circuit Low Input". They weren't sure what it meant and said call Ford. I figured I'd asked the experts here. Should I replace the DPFE? If so, where exactly is it? Also, I was rear-ended a few weeks ago (very low-speed), could it have triggered this? I didn't notice any damage to the exhaust. Thanks.
I just repl one on my wifes 02 exp. for a P0401 code. Yours is very similar. The parts guy at ford said they had 40 in stock so their used quite a lot. The sensor is located on the pass. side of the eng comp. back near the firewall. It sits on top of two small rubber hoses that attach to metal tubes. These tubes lead down to the EGR tube. Mine cost $70. Good luck.
Thanks. I picked up a new DPFE and popped it in. It was about $80 and pretty simple to install. The dealer I went had 36 in stock, so apparently it is a common problem. I also noticed that the replacement DPFE had a slightly different part #. Maybe it was redesigned? Anyway, so far no SES light.
You SHOULD have checked with the dealer service department. Many of these have been given an extended warranty for free replacement on late models due to excessive premature failure.
Regarding the location of the DPFE sensor, 12979 said it was near the passenger side near the firewall...I'm wondering why I can't find that. Is it possible we're talking about 2 different engines? Mine's the 4.6L V8. Can anyone confirm the location for that engine?
