"Some folks advised against HEI but made it obvious it has nothing to do with HEI being a bad concept, but rather they prefer Ford on a Ford, which is fair but is misleading."
I'm not advising him on anything, I merely said there were better options. I actually bought one of those HEI distributors on amazon, it was just to bulky and hit my thermostat housing. He was looking for information which you provided plenty, I recommended what I have and suggested looking at the website. Now it's up to him.
i SEE LOT OF THREADS HERE SAYING HEI IS NOT QUALITY AND CHINA JUNK--BEEN USING THIS SET UP 15 YEARS AND NEVER NO PROBLEMS -- I DONOT HAVE THAT UGLY SEPERAT COIL TO HIDE OR AND BOX--BUY AT THE CORRECT SELLER AND YOU DO NOT HAVE ANY PROBLEMS--YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR-- IF YOU WANT CHEAP THEN THAT IS WHAT YOU GET CHINA JUNK AND TROUBLE-- GET LOST OF COMPLIMENTS ON MY BUILDS WITH THAT HEI UP FRONT AND DIFFERANT COLOR CAPS---GOOD LUCK--
this is what I use for a BBF. I had to fab up a new thermostat housing as the HEI wouldn't sit down with stock one or either the one with the shaved side.. I've had it since day one and you hit the starter and engine fires before it makes one full revolution... I'm pleased with it and of course..... it's yellow
I had to laugh, thinking about this thread, when I was looking through one of the Ford truck pages on Facebook where one of the members asked, looking at a picture of one guy's engine with his HEI distributor prominently sticking up out front, where he got that distributor, 'cause he wanted one just like it for his truck.
I was professionally wrenching when HEI first showed up on GM's and there were a lot of issues with the early ones. They have definitely gotten more dependable over the years, but I don't care what engine they are on the they are a God awful ugly looking piece of equipment IMHO. I know John (jniolon) says he has had no problems with his and I believe him but he can't even run his air filter longitudinal with the engine because of that monstrosity.
