I THINK it may be sorted out but I am not so sure. I adjusted my mixture setting to get it to the highest idle by ear. I have a 1/8" nipple to install to do the test with a vacuum meter but need to buy one and haven't done it yet.
The hard starts seem to have improved. One or 2 pumps on the gas pedal and I have been able to get it to start pretty reliably although now we need to see how it does in the hot weather. I am going to do the float adjustment and replace the gaskets with a couple of phenolic ones @Bvas Made up for me all as referenced in the link above.
That said, my fuel filter is empty while it is running. I don't seem to have any fuel starvation issues yet like I did early on, but it always had fuel in it until I recently looked. The fuel pump (carter style)has less than 1k miles on it and was the product of much work to find one that worked. I have a stock one to send out to cowboy John which I have been putting off so as not to spend money I don't need to.
Should there be fuel in the clear inline fuel filter or if it is running it is fine?! I have a bunch of posts on this but it seems I need to revisit it. I have a US Motorworks Carter style pump M3553 unit now. It does not appear to be leaking fuel at the diaphragm although it may be weeping the tiniest amount of oil.
When parked fuel will drain back into the filter.
I hate to sieve money I dint have to but it seems like I have to throw another pump at it?!?!
I do not but perhaps that is probably a good idea at this point. Can I put it in the soft line where the fuel filter connects in? Need to figure out the right one. Some are only for temporary installation. I had an oil filled one on my Camaro that failed after a year but the under hood temps were much higher.
I had a similar issue on a Mopar 440- different animal, I know.. I had a clear filter on it and when engine was hot and running the filter appeared empty. Yes empty! How could it be empty when engine is running and no fuel starvation issues? ( That car was a hot rod and ran like a banshee!) Any way I figure the fuel was hot and flashed into a vapor at the filter and back to a liquid in the carb bowl...?? I just ignored it until someone else would point it out to me. I hope you don't have a plastic fuel filter.... Risky...

I do have a plastic fuel filter for now so I can see the fuel level. I would prefer glass but I haven't seen a glass inline filter. Would love a glass bowl on my carb but those are $400!
I had starvation issues. The glass bowl at pump was full but I decided to install plastic inline filter (for testing only) before the pump and it never filled more than half full. Idk what that meant but I rebuilt the pump and all is fine.
