I spent a lot of time looking at toppers recently. It seems there are good and bad reviews on all of them. I am leaning towards a Smart Cap, but $4,900 is a lot for something you have to assemble yourself or pay to have done. A friend had one before someone ran a red light and totaled his truck. He had nothing but good things to say about it and will be buying another one. I'm still considering an ARE ot Leer, so it's interesting to hear other people's experiences.
Yeah, I have heard nothing but good things about them too... and from what I have seen, even the assembly isn't difficult, but sure, it is one extra step to take when getting one. That makes me wonder though, if something were to happen to one panel, I wonder if they would warranty, or sell that one panel... Anyway, I saw a guy here in the campground with one on his truck not too long ago. I stopped and asked him about it, but didn't get up close and personal to it. He said it was his second one, the first one he left on the truck he sold, and when he got this truck he bought another one. He said he really liked it and recommended it.
As for costs... it is up there, but they are all pretty expensive IMO. May as well spend what it costs to get the one you want the first time. When I got my truck I got a Backflip MX4 tonneau cover, mostly because it was one of the least expensive hard, folding covers, although, at a little over $800 (on sale) I still found it expensive. Now today, I wish I would have made better decisions and spent a little extra for a better one, like maybe a Diamondback. It would have been more money, but it is definitely built better than the MX4 as it is just trash. So, I am waiting for the day I can replace it, and when I do, it will be with a SmartCap! Buy once, cry once! lol
Scraprat........How did you attach your Cell antenna to your side mirror arm?
I made this with aluminum, bent and drilled. After first trip reversed the mount so it wouldn't catch wind as bad. It worked well for about 3 years but aluminum broke. It needs to be thicker. Traveling at 80 mph+ took its toll on the thinner aluminum.
