DIY filter rock guard

I like to use the long cat ultra high effect filters or some times the long Baldwin filters.

by the time I get to service intervals….i get a few rock chips which sometimes goes to bare metal and once did a pin hole leak.

was walking thru the homedepot hardware department and saw these rubber sewer drain type pipe joints

bought a 3” to try on my cat ultra high effect filters and a 5” to try on the amsoil by pass or cat high efficiency oil filter …just to size them out.

the 3” fits perfect on the fuel filter with some hand lotion as a lube and a few light taps with a rubber mallet.

for the oil filters will try them later today.

my truck has 37@ tires and 4” lift …so even with that + 7” fuel filter tip height increase…still get occasional rock chips.

maybe this will help.

No way in hell would I run a filter that hangs that low. That's just asking for trouble. I don't even like how low the stock motorcraft filter hangs.

Yeah I think I would be relocating that thing or perhaps rotate it 90 degrees.

for reference, the center of the axles are about 18" from the ground and the bottom of the filter is pretty close to in line with that.

its probally higher off the ground than a stock oil filter

Are you sure about that? In the photos it appears to be noticeably lower than the radius arms, which would put it below the level of the front axle. I realize photos may look different from reality, but it doesn't look anywhere near 18" from the ground. Just looking at it, it appears to be much lower than my stock motorcraft filter.

Speakerfritz, in another thread you mentioned having added a fuel filter between the OEM water filter at the fuel tank and the OEM fuel filter under the hood. I assume that’s the filter in your photo. I also use CAT’s 416-1225 ultrahigh efficiency 4micron filter, but my SPE setup tucks up above the bottom of the fuel tank and its skid plate.

Your homedepot special is a clever way to prevent another rock chip or puncture. Given some of the roads I drive, I’d be looking for a way to add some clearance along the lines of FishOnOne’s comment.
My Amsoil bypass filter is mounted behind the passenger front wheel, so to eliminate damage, I built a housing.

There's no way I'd take a one ton, especially a dually, off road if I didn't have to...

Before you comment, I know oil rig guys do and etc... and if I did or needed to, I might think about changing out the factory one ton suspension to something more forgiving... JMO.

I have a 94 4Runner project sitting in my garage that is now a retirment project, or will be next year, that is more suitable for off roading. But there is a difference between taking a dirt road up to your house in the mountains, driving a logging road and going offroading where there aren't any roads... YMMV.

Let's see what this starts...

Manager we worked for would say “careful, you wouldn’t have your job if they weren’t buying them Cowboy Cadillacs” 😂

He was right. Lol

Sorry, I wasn't paying close enough attention. I was thinking oil filter. Should have looked at the pics more closely. Fritz has a newer truck than mine, so the primary fuel filter situation isn't comparable to mine. But still, I think that filter is hanging down a good bit lower than my stock primary filter, and likely would present a hazard on anything other than smooth pavement.

That looks good! I would like to build something like that to go around my ID bypass filter... It's behind the front passenger side tire, and I do have "mudflaps" on, so that would help some. The ID filter is mounted somewhat nestled inside the bracket for the steps, so that somewhat helps too, but I would love to have something like what you have there. I will say too that the ID housing is quite robust, so I am not worried about rocks and such... I would be more worried about something larger getting flipped up from the tire. Great job!

Hahaha... I also forgot to mention the full size soccer mom SUVs. The Tahoes, Escalades, the new Jeep full size ones and the Yukons...

Those Karens act like they own the road in those... .
