Went to move the '77, for some reason looked upwards at the dome lamp, was a hole, a jagged hole, in the center of the white lense. Touched it, pieces fell out, it's crumbling. Light is OK, chrome is OK, but the lense is falling apart. New one on me.
Never seen a 70s era Ford, that the dome light lens was not deteriorated/gone. I got this one from DC. Haven't put it in yet. Got one of their extra bright LED bulbs for bezel too. The way the lens is textured, is supposed to diffuse light better as well. We shall see. Been thinking about getting a center dome light from something too. Maybe the Bronco style with the map lights.
That lens is available as a repro. I installed one in my truck. Same issue, the original one was crumbling.
Amazed me that had not noticed it. Mine is the white one, or rather was. I seen where can get the clear plastic ones with jeweled like facets too. I also had a short piece of old red ratchet strap with a buckle hanging on a gun rack hook that I used for I forget what .... went to take it down, it just come apart like was tissue paper.

I have been thinking a lot about that fire 1800 miles away.

Just seen this after posting this, that is what I am thinking. Our police cars had a round light up between the visors, I might add one of them, but mount it back towards center of roof so it's not so hard on old eyes. Maybe get one that lets a person choose white or red (with the switch) as the light color, red being easier on the eyes at night.

I picked up some of the underdash courtesy lights at one point and put them in my truck. Made a world of difference on interior lighting. When I replaced my wiring harness with the American Auto Wire kit, it came with the under dash lights.
And as far as fires, I plan to have a couple of new extinguishers in my truck at all times. Don't want to take that chance.
If you or a friend has a 3D printer you can print your own. Not really much of a cost savings but was good practice for learning CAD. 1st pic printed in PETG "transparent" and the 2nd in white.
They all do that. That old plastic is not happy being by a hot light bulb all the time. I bought a repro white lense from LMC, or JBG or somewhere and the fitment is bad, but it's better than nothing or crumbly plastic. I was able to modify it a bit and get it ok.
X they all do that over time, espicially with the dome light on (or the doors open alot) the heat from the old style bulb makes the plastic brittle. If you are going to work on the truck for an extended amount of time, pop out the old style bulb. If you want to run the old style cover get a new LED culb. Even attaches liek the old bulb with the wire loops.
