hydraulic clutch

Hey guys,
My mechanical clutch linkage is acting up on my 83. I was thinking of swapping it over to a hydraulic. I think I would need a new bellhousing to go with it to mount the slave. Also can I use my existing pedals and adapt the master cylinder to it or do I have to swap in new pedal stuff? The problem with my mechanical clutch is that sometimes I'll barely be able to put it in gear because its not disengaging fully and I'll drive a few miles and it will suddenly have no free play at all and sometimes actually be riding the throwout bearing. I replaced the body mount bushings as I thought that might be the cause but it still does it and I have decided that it is too inconsistent to be a body/frame relation problem. Could there be something wrong with my clutch fork/throwout bearing/pressure plate combo? If I can fix the mechanical I will keep it.
Thanks a lot

Sounds odd that the play would be changing with a mechanical clutch. Is the adjusting nut at the bottom backing itself off? Try a little loctite on the nut to stop it from moving if thats the case. If you are going to hydraulic, you will have to change your pedals.

This one sounds like the linkage is off. On most manual transmissions, there is a dust cap that allows access to the inside of the bellhousing to inspect the clutch pack and throw-out bearing or slave cylinder. Check to see if yours has one. If so, remove the cover and have someone push the clutch all the way to the floor. Watch the fork as it moves. Also inspect the linkage as it moves back and forth to make sure there is no excess play in the linkage. A lot of times there is a loose nut in the linkage, double check to make sure all are tightened properly. See if this helps...
