This problem has puzzled me since last winter. My ABS light will come on and stay on for a while. Well tonight I went to the car wash and when my bronco came out the darn light was on. Any ideas on where it migth be getting wet and then its lit ? I'm thinking it getting shorted out and when it drys off all is well
There are probably more then just one, but the one that was causing me problems was the one right above the wheel wells. Just follow the sensor wire from the wheel up into the engine compartment, and you will come across a connector.
By all means, check the speed sensor cables first. They can be loose where they plug in. Check for any wear and tear. I had the same problem. Turns out the front left cable was rubbing against the tire. Nearly wore the cable completely through.
You have three cables to check two on each front wheel and one above the rear diff. make sure the plugs are tight.
Another possibility is a loose wheel bearing. When I had that problem (axle nut kept backing off) the ABS would wig out. All it took was a tightening and a new lock ring.
My 1995 Bronco is having the same problem, only I don't think that it's getting wet. I'll drive for about an hour then the ABS light will come on and stay on. Then it will do the same thing next time. Ill check the connections. I have just been hearing about an easy $12 repair and $500-$700 repairs so I'm a bit nervous.
Check all the connections as listed above, just push them all tight and check the rear connection over the axle, I did just this as every one suggested, I've yet to see my ABS light come on since the beginning of december, I think I've fixed the problem
Hey on my '94 XLT 351, I had the same problem and I did a different thing.... I changed the relay in the engine compartment, which fixed the problem. ($3 at your local parts shop.... local mechanic wanted $50 for diagnosis... :P )
The first thing I would do would be to make sure the master cylinder is full. If the brake fluid is too low sometimes it trips the abs light. I don't know if it's a fluke or if ford did this so you'd check your brake fluid, but that always fixes our fleet of rangers at work.
I had the same problem in my 93. The dealership diagnosed it as being a bad ABS module($700.00)! They replaced it and the problem persisted. I changed the left wheel sensor and that did the trick. The right side had been replaced recently. Oh yeah they are not fun to get out!
Next time the light comes on, open the hood and wiggle the electrical connector on the master cylinder and see if it flickers or goes out. I had the same problem on my 89 bronco and found a broken pin in the connector.
Hey gents, same problem on 93 bronco. RABS variable speed sensor located on top of the rear differaential. I unplugged mine, two wire conector. 1/2 inch socket to get it out. It was coated from 11 years of wear and tear. cleaned it off and re installed. put some fresh oil on the o ring. problem cleared. talked to my mechanic friend (30 years) and he said go down to the dealership and buy one for $20. They have a new design and they do go bad / wear out. Light cam on again about 3 months later, so I went with the advice. Hasn't return since. I also have the shop manuals and the trouble shooting flow chart led to this sensor also. Other indications will be a flaky transmission shift point. This sensor provided input to the E4OD tranny.
