7.3L Removal....

I recently picked up a '93 4x4, F350, 7.3L NA with a ZF5. The motor is locked up, so I'm pulling it out. I have it completely stripped and disassembled the entire front end of the truck....I'm replacing every single consumable part and 'restoring' every other part.

Question is how do I separate the transmission from the engine? Historically, I've only pulled engine and tranny out as a single unit. I was hopeful that while gently lifting the engine off the perches that the two would separate, but didn't happen. Right now, the transmission is still attached to the crossmember and supported by floor jack towards the engine.

I assume I'll have to pull the tranny back towards the rear of the truck. Any tricks and/or recommendations?

Thanks!

unbolt the engine from the bellhousing, and support the front of the trans with a ratchet strap. pull the engine straight out and the clutch assemble will stay with engine.

All six large bolts are already out, plus the four small bolts that hold the lower cover. I"ll try the strap so that the transmission cannot move forward(although it cannot move forward much because the rear mount bolts are still attached.

the strap is not for keeping it from moving forward, it is to keep it from falling down in front when the input shaft clears the clutch assembly.

Gotcha.....I welded up a cradle for my floor jack to support the transmission and eventually lower it down.

Anybody pull the whole assembly (engine/trans/transfer case) out together?

I think that would be very awkward and poorly balanced. Good chance the transfer case weighs it down too much and gets caught between the firewall and engine crossmember. Not to mention the sideways twist it will invoke. Seems like it would be a lot easier to pull the transfer case first, then pull engine and transmission. Wouldn't be an issue if the cab was off so you could attach to the transfer case and balance out the pull, like in the factory where I'm sure they drop the whole assembly in from the top because they can.
