Wiper speed and function

1955 F250 electric wipers.

My wipers only go one speed. They started off working as 1 speed and then went 2 speeds for a very brief period of time when I first tried them. No idea if it is the switch or motor. How do I test if it is the motor.

Nevertheless, attached is a video of the wipers moving at the one speed they do move. Seems awfully slow. Is it the normal speed?

Also when the wipers "park" they stop 2/3 down the windshield. I have to time turning them off just right to get them to stop in the lowest position. What should I be looking for or adjusting.

Maybe the linkage is bound up causing all of the above issues? Does the switch affect the park function?

Put Rainx on the windshield in case I get caught in the rain as a stop gap. I will at least be able to see at slow speeds with the wipers and the windshield will clear itself at higher speeds.

Presuming stock electric setup and a decent memory, here goes:

Your switch should have 4 terminals, A, F, P, B.

B is "constant" power from the battery through the ignition switch. This is a yellow wire.

The remaining terminals go to the switch motor:

P is "constant" power always passed from the B terminal. This provides "constant" power to allow the motor to park and is usually the black wire. The motor unit itself has a positional switch that breaks this circuit when the wipers are rotated into the parked position.

A red - I believe this is powered high speed

F green - I believe this is powered low speed

I will check it today. Are the wipers moving at the correct speed? If not that would indicate a motor or a linkage problem as well.

They do move to a "park position" just not the correct position.

Make sure the arm that bolts to motor is in the correct position. It is supposed to be pointing to the driver’s side when the wipers are parked.
The arm is pointing to the drivers side and the wiper arms will park at the bottom of the windshield.

I have had to turn the wiper switch off at just the right time to get the wipers down low for about 30 years! You get used to it! LOL

If they park in the same spot each time just pull the wiper arms off then put them where they should stop..

I agree but I do it with a wet windshield as a dry windshield has too much friction

I did for years too until I found out there was a park function. The previous owner replaced the wiper switch with a toggle and I never knew there were 2 speeds, park, and the switch was not a toggle.

This method would be accurate if the wipers move up from the park position.
If the wipers move down before going up from the park position, then the arms from the wiper motor are not in the correct position.

In other words…..just moving the wipers will shift the entire sweep pattern of the wipers.

A couple of updates.

As per above it sounds like if they drop down as soon as I turn the switch on then that is the normal function and I need to re set the arms. When I turn them on the do dip about 3/4" and then start back up.

I think I found the source of my issue. My truck died trying to start it and I was able to roll down a hill and bump start it and get home. I thought the battery would be charged back a bit when I got home but it was dead. I out a full charge on it with a 20amp battery box on 6v and then trickle charge over night.

I figured out my battery was ashy charging and the generator needed to be re polarized after sitting for the winter. Verified it was charging and decided to test the wipers again.

They work on both speeds now and the low speed is much quicker and looks normal. High speed is nice and quick. I think the battery was so low there was not enough juice to the switch or the motor to run the high speed and just enough to move the wipers.

I think the problem may be solved by cost getting the wipers to park properly now. I will climb under the dash and verify the linkage is straight when the wipers are parked and reinstall the wipers if that is the issue.

Nevr would have guessed that was the issue.

The dipping down or not is not the critical part.

If you adjust the wiper position, just make sure they will not be banging off the lower windshield seal.

The dog legged arm attached to the motor can be moved a spline one way or the other to take away the downward motion at start up..

Mine are similar. When I park the wipers they stop at about 3/4 of the way down. When I turn them back on they go to the low point of the windshield and then go back up again. I have to time it just right to stop them at the low point. No idea why that happens. Would be nice to solve it. I am using a 12 volt wiper motor from Mid fifty and the original wiper brackets and mounts.
