I would like to install an alarm system in my new 250 super crew. We all know why and don't have to detail it. I have heard good things about Viper. I would like to get one with a pager, just in case it goes off in the middle of the night. What do ya'll recommend?

Alarm System
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 13-Dec-02 AT 10:52 AM (EST)]I had a viper on my last vehicle (no pager, but it had remote start). I LOVED my alarm unit; never had a single problem. The vipers are very good for the $$$, but if you're looking for a budget system to do yourself, a lot of the guys here have been talking about "Bulldog" alarms. Just one comment: regardless of which alarm you go with, get the remote start -- it's the one thing I miss the most from my last vehicle. I don't have one on my SD yet, but it's on my Christmas list.
On Edit: Forty, did I hear that right? You got some electronic gizmo on your "all levers" truck? What's next? ESOF?
OK, lessons learned the hard way. Had a couple of vehicles stolen including a new PSD SD. Bought another. What I decided to do for my new truck. Works so far.
1. Get an alarm, I have a Viper, no pager, the pagers are of limited use, won't penetrate a building like a mall. Save your bucks, buy the Viper without the pager. Don't depend on the alarm to notify anybody, or for anyone( but you ) to care if it goes off. It is just a trip wire to get you out of bed so you can take other measures.
2. Get a steering wheel lock, not one of those cheap $20 clubs, a child could get one off in less than 5 seconds. Get somthing like a AutoLock 2000, about $100. It can be defeated but takes much longer, 3 to 5 minutes of hard work with the alarm blaring.
3. Install a hidden fuel interrupter switch or similar cut-off. If they get past the alarm, cut the Autolock off they won't get far without fuel.
4. Consider a system lock-down device like a "Powerlock", in addition to the other measures.
5. Buy good insurance. Most kids or small timers will go to an easier target if it looks like it's not an easy steal. However, if a PRO wants your truck, it's gone. They will pop the hood with the alarm blaring, cut the battery power and drag it off with a tow truck. Parts are Parts they don't intend to use the whole truck anyway.
I had a Python ESP alarm put in last month. Viper/Python, their both made by Directed Electronics, Inc. (DEI). Got the AED (Automatic Engine Disable) & car jacking feature wired in too. $20 extra labor for the wiring. It doesn't shut down an already running engine buit prevents it from starting. Has a "very" powerful antenna for extended range. I don't know about malls but it works when I am inside my home or in my office building. I've been over a hundred yards away and it works just fine. Like it because it has multiple ports for extra sensors. Hooked up my PIAA ATD (Anti-Theft Device) for my 959 projector fog lights to it. Has many, many nice features (i.e., passive locking) too. Arms itself 20 seconds after the last door is closed. A single push of the disable button will disarm the unit and unlock the drivers side door and a second push will unlock all doors. Just like the OEM unit. I have it locking all the doors three seconds after the engine has been turned on and unlocks all the doors when the motor is shut off. Overall, not a bad unit. Got it for $250 installed w/ a great warranty! Good luck.

Kinda wrong here. I don't know how it does it, but somwhow it knows when it needs to open all the doors when the ignition is turned off or just my door. Whenever I'm the only one getting in it only unlocks my door when gettin out. Kinda helps on the passenger door actuators! Anyways, seems like a pretty smart unit.
I have a Sidewinder alarm/remote start/keyless entry. It is made by the same company as Viper and Python. These are really good systems. They are not just the ordinary systems you can get just anywhere. The installation techs are trained specifically for these systems. Also, if you have any trouble, there is a 1-800 number that you can call and they will direct you to the nearest dealer. They cost a little more, but, I feel they are worth it.

I had a Viper with the pager on a T/A I had a few years back. The pager worked great for me.
I worked at night in downtown Chicago on the 14th floor of the Board of Trade. Someone had broken in to my car, parked on the street and the pager went off. It actually gave me enough time to get down to the street and see the guy who did it.. Although, I couldn't catch him. He had bashed in my driver side window and stole a coat out of the back seat. When I came down, he was farther down the block, trying to break open parking meters.
Your right about an alarm only being good to alert you, because at least in the city, 'No One' pays any attention to a car alarm going off.
