In my ignition harness that goes to the coil there are 3 wires that go to the distributor plug.
there are 3 more wires in it. A green with a yellow stripe that goes to the negative side if the coil.
there is a red wire with a ? Grey stripe that goes to the positive side side of the coil. Then there is a red with a white stripe that’s cut. There is also a cut wire on the positive side of the coil.
im not sure if that red with white stripe goes to the coil (bypass wire or if it may be the temp sending unit wire?
An update
the red wire with a white stripe is definately the temp sending wire. I separated the temp and oil pressure wires from the harness due to running mechanical gauges.
I still don’t know what goes to that extra wire in the positive side of the coil?
I see no other open wire in that harness.
One more update, I see what looks like an old condenser on the old original coil. I’m going to assume that’s where the extra wire on the positive side of the coil goes?
Ok I have all the wiring for the ignition and gauges figured out.
tried to start it but no spark. I have 12 volts to the coil and 12 volts to the ignition box.
my reverse lights and neutral safety switch wires are temporarily hooked up with spade connectors.
the neutral safety switch is newer with a different plug. Will turn over in any gear and will turn over with those wires disconnected.
1979 F150 body on a 81 F250 frame.
has a C6 351w
the motor is out of a truck I parted to build this.
ignition box is new but been behind the seat a few years. Coil is off the 83 and worked a couple months ago.
I have power to the white wire at the ignition box but not the red. Is this correct?
Can’t figure why I have power to the white lead on the ignition box but not the red?
I pulled the ignition switch, it’s a big plug in on the back. I can’t see how wires would have been swapped?
Getting closer. I pulled the ground strap off the firewall and cleaned everything good. Had it bolted to the aluminum intake. It’s now bolted to an intake manifold bolt.
it will now fire and run but when I let off the key it dies.
Wiring harness is original. Nothing looks hacked except the neutral safety plug has been cutoff.
wires from the ignition box to power are white and red. I have power to the white side and nothing to the red side.
I just noticed that the plug from the truck is backwards. Red/ blue stripe goes to the white on the box and white from the truck goes to the red on the box
it’s the same with the old box
