I just swapped in a duraspark 2 into my 85 f150 and I can't get it to fire. I have power to the module and coil when the key is in run and start but aparently I have no spark, it smells like I'm getting fuel. I've tried 2 different coils and modules, and the carburator is new. The timing should be close enough, and I've turned it 180* to make sure it wasn't on the exhaust stroke. Where should I go next? What's the best way to check that the coil is producing spark? The distributor is from a junkyard but has a new cap and rotor, and it does turn when the engine is cranking. Is there anything else I should look for to figure out why I'm not getting any spark? Thanks guys

To check if your coil is working Just pull one plug wire and plug (new plug would be better) and put the plug wire right on the coil(bypassing the distributor) and the spark plug on the other end, lay the plug on the engine block somewhere and give it a rip. If there is no spark still its your coil, if there is spark check your distributor out. Hope this helps you.

I'll do that, thanks steve. I tried that once but I didn't have the plug touching anything on the engine block, so I didn't have any spark. I didn't realize it needed to be grounded, thanks again.
check for an AC signal to the module purple and orange wire from the dist. should have a .3 to .55 volt ac signal at the box black from distributor should read ground on meter green check btw coil neg terminal and box plug should have continuity(0 ohms) the coil can be tested by itself by putting 12 volts to pos terminal(bat)put a coil wire in with a sparkplug to ground take another wire hook to neg (tach) terminal the tap on a GOOD ground the plug should fire. you can also check the coil for an open by checkinfg resistance btwn pos and neg(low ohms) and the pos and coil wire terminal (high resistance) make sure the "box has power 12volts during start non whitev wire , 7-8.5 key in run position
check all your connections then check them again good luck!!
