Hi all,
So, I have been using a 7/8" socket for my 2024 F250 4wd Platinum crew cab. It has always been a little loose, so I ordered up the 21mm socket. Won't fit over any of the lug nuts. I put a 22mm on them and there is the same play as a 7/8" socket. So what the heck? a 21.5mm socket that isn't produced? Is this because of the special Ford capped lug nuts? I use an impact gun to just snug, then 165# torque wrench. Maybe I should stop being so perfect with the tools...

21mm fits your lugs. Capped nuts have swollen most likely
Caps are most likely swollen and are ready to pop off. Ford has had this issue for decades and still insists on using them. Many folks swap them for "regular" lug nuts.
In the past, when I've run into a "snug" lug nut, I've tapped a 21mm socket on to "resize" it...loosen the nut to the point where its still on the stud by several threads and pull the socket off.
McGard is the only US manufacturer of lugnuts. Just make sure whatever you buy is not a stainless capped version. They are triple nickel plated and pretty much never rust or fade.
Had this problem a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, I was on the side of the Interstate with a flat and couldn't get 2 of the lug nuts off. Ordered a new set without the jackets.
I've had my F-150 for 9 years with factory (capped) lugs, but I was the only one who ever removed the wheels from this vehicle. I never used an impact to either tighten or remove them. Never had even one lug nut bulge or become unusable, and I rotate the tires twice a year. Same thing with my 13 year old Focus. Now my wife takes her Fusion to the dealer all the time for oil changes and rotations, and we've replaced all of the lug nuts on that car 2 times, some have been replaced 3 times (I've gotten the dealer to replace them once for free).
I agree that the capped lug nuts are a poor design, but if not subjected to the trauma of an impact, they at least have a chance of lasting quite a long time. From now on, if any of these vehicles have an unusable lug nut again, they will be replaced with solids.
