First tow with a Lightning
We recently bought a 5-acre property with a house and horse barn, next to our son in law and daughter’s ranch. We are going to use it as a primary home. We are getting up in years. When this property came available the "kids" suggested we buy it so that we could be near them wehen we needed to be cared for by them.
We are renovating house and moving stuff from our current primary home and our remote cabin to the new home. Once the renovation is complete, we will sell our current primary home. The Lightning is being used a lot running for building supplies and for hauling stuff.
I bought an Aluminum frame 5x12 enclosed aluminum frame trailer to move stuff over. This weekend I towed the trailer empty 128 miles to our remote cabin. I loaded it up with about 2,000# of furniture and stuff and drove it 135 miles back to the new house.
I charged to100% before each trip. When I arrived, I had 20-25% battery reserve left. The mi/kwh was between 1.2 -1.3 mi/kw either empty or loaded.
The Lightning towed great. The range was fine for that distance without needing to charge enroute. Not the long-distance tow machine my F-450 was but for these distances it was perfect and cheap to run being charged at home.
We had Tesla install a tow kit on one of our Model Y's. The Model Y has a towing limit of 3,500# and 350# tongue weight . The trailer with a GVWR of 2,990# can even be towed with the Tesla if needed.
